What is a loan review?

A loan review is the process of evaluating and assessing a financial institution’s loan portfolio to ensure that loans are being managed in accordance with internal policies and regulatory guidelines. The review identifies potential risks, ensures credit quality, and checks for compliance with lending standards. Loan reviewers analyze documentation, borrower performance, and loan structures to detect early signs of problems and recommend corrective actions if necessary. This helps banks and lenders minimize losses and maintain a healthy lending environment.

How does the loan review role typically interact with other departments within a financial institution?

Professionals in Loan Review regularly collaborate with teams such as credit underwriting, risk management, and lending officers. They often provide feedback on loan quality and identify areas for improvement in the lending process. This interaction ensures that lending practices remain compliant with internal policies and regulatory standards. Open communication and teamwork are essential, as Loan Review analysts must often clarify findings and work together to resolve issues or implement recommendations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a loan review specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Loan Review specialist, you need a solid background in finance or accounting, strong analytical skills, and a relevant degree such as a bachelor's in finance, accounting, or business. Familiarity with loan management systems, risk assessment tools, and regulatory compliance platforms is typically required. Attention to detail, critical thinking, and effective communication are essential soft skills for evaluating loan portfolios and collaborating with internal teams. These competencies ensure accurate risk assessment, regulatory compliance, and the overall financial health of lending institutions.

What is the difference between Loan Review vs Loan Underwriter?

AspectLoan ReviewLoan Underwriter
Primary RoleAssess the quality and compliance of loans after approvalEvaluate and approve loan applications before funding
CredentialsTypically requires similar certifications, such as mortgage or banking licensesRequires similar credentials, including underwriting certifications
Work EnvironmentMostly office-based, reviewing loan files and documentationOffice-based, analyzing applications and financial documents
Industry UsageCommon in banking, mortgage, and financial institutionsWidely used in lending, banking, and mortgage sectors

Loan Review and Loan Underwriter roles are closely related in the lending industry. While Loan Review focuses on evaluating the quality and compliance of loans post-approval, Loan Underwriters are responsible for assessing and approving loan applications initially. Both roles require similar credentials and work in similar environments, often within the same institutions. Understanding these differences helps job seekers and employers clarify responsibilities and expectations in the lending process.

Job Description:

What It Means to Be a Consultant at Crowe
Consulting is a dynamic business focused on solving problems for our clients and serving our core markets through innovative solutions. As technology and AI continue to reshape the consulting landscape, we are looking for individuals who are curious, adaptable, and eager to learn. At Crowe, consultants are expected to build both technical and transferable skills, think critically, and use technology to solve real business problems. In this role, you will continuously learn, collaborate across teams, and explore how tools, including emerging AI capabilities, can improve efficiency, insights, and client outcomes.

As you grow, you'll also begin to take ownership of client relationships, contribute to account strategy, and support the delivery of high-impact work. Developing a sense of account leadership, including understanding client needs, ensuring delivery excellence, and building trusted partnerships, is part of what sets successful consultants apart.

Success in this role comes from a growth mindset, strong communication skills, advanced critical thinking, and the ability to navigate new challenges with confidence.

We are seeking a Loan Review Consultant to support credit risk consulting projects for a variety of clients within the financial services industry. In this role, you will assist in evaluating credit quality, loan documentation, and compliance with bank policies while gaining exposure to a broad range of financial institutions and lending portfolios. Working alongside experienced professionals, you will contribute to loan review engagements, credit risk assessments, and other consulting projects that help clients strengthen governance and risk management practices.

Job Responsibilities
  • Provide loan review support and assist with credit risk consulting engagements for financial institution clients.

  • Gather, organize, and analyze loan documentation, including financial statements, collateral information, and supporting credit files.

  • Prepare preliminary financial analyses, including basic cash flow assessments and collateral evaluations, to identify potential credit risks.

  • Evaluate whether commercial loan files adhere to bank policies, procedures, and applicable federal and state banking regulations.

  • Review loan documentation for completeness and consistency, identifying exceptions and escalating findings to senior team members as appropriate.

  • Assist in systematic reviews of commercial loan portfolios to evaluate credit quality, documentation, credit administration, and policy compliance.

  • Support additional credit-related consulting projects, including due diligence engagements and data analysis initiatives.

  • Contribute to loan review reports and other client deliverables by preparing analyses, exhibits, and supporting documentation.

  • Maintain project tracking tools and internal workflows while managing multiple assignments in a fast-paced consulting environment.

  • Develop knowledge of loan origination, underwriting, credit administration, and credit risk management practices.

  • Utilize Excel and other analytical tools to improve efficiency and support client engagements.

  • Collaborate with team members across multiple client engagements and geographic markets while delivering high-quality client service.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • 1+ years of experience in commercial banking, credit analysis, loan review, financial institutions, or risk consulting.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Basic understanding of commercial lending, underwriting, and credit analysis.

  • Completion of a commercial banking training program is preferred, but not required.

  • Familiarity with commercial loan products and financial statement analysis.

  • Knowledge of credit processes, including loan origination, underwriting, credit administration, and portfolio management.

  • Understanding of federal and state banking regulations related to commercial lending is preferred.

  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills with attention to detail.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and other analytical or reporting tools.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to present findings clearly and professionally.

  • Ability to manage multiple priorities while working independently and collaboratively within a team environment.

  • Demonstrated willingness to learn new technologies, banking systems, and credit risk methodologies.

  • Self-motivated, resourceful, and committed to delivering high-quality work and exceptional client service.

  • Willingness to travel up to 50% based on client engagement needs.

We expect the candidate to uphold Crowe's values of Care, Trust, Courage, and Stewardship. These values define who we are. We expect all of our people to act ethically and with integrity at all times.
