How much do lng process engineer jobs pay per year?

As of Jun 10, 2026, the average yearly pay for lng process engineer in the United States is $92,018.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $74,500.00 and $103,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an LNG Process Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an LNG Process Engineer, you need a solid background in chemical or process engineering, with a relevant degree and experience in LNG plant operations and design. Familiarity with process simulation software (such as Aspen HYSYS), safety standards, and technical certifications like Professional Engineer (PE) are commonly required. Strong problem-solving abilities, communication, and teamwork skills help you excel in collaborative and safety-critical environments. These competencies ensure safe, efficient plant operations and innovative solutions to complex processing challenges.

What are some common challenges an LNG Process Engineer faces during plant commissioning and how can they be addressed?

During plant commissioning, LNG Process Engineers often encounter challenges such as process instability, equipment malfunctions, and integration of new control systems. Addressing these issues typically involves close collaboration with multidisciplinary teams, thorough testing and validation of equipment, and quick problem-solving to ensure safety and efficiency. Familiarity with relevant regulations and continuous communication with operations staff are also crucial for a successful commissioning process.

What does an LNG Process Engineer do?

An LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) Process Engineer is responsible for designing, optimizing, and overseeing the processes involved in converting natural gas into its liquid form for storage and transportation. They work on projects related to gas treatment, liquefaction, storage, and regasification, ensuring safety, efficiency, and compliance with industry standards. Their role often includes troubleshooting process issues, implementing technological improvements, and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to ensure smooth operations of LNG facilities.

What is the difference between Lng Process Engineer vs Gas Processing Engineer?

AspectLng Process EngineerGas Processing Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's in Chemical or Mechanical Engineering, relevant certificationsBachelor's in Chemical or Mechanical Engineering, relevant certifications
Work EnvironmentNatural gas liquefaction plants, offshore facilitiesNatural gas processing plants, upstream facilities
Industry UsagePrimarily in LNG production and exportIn natural gas treatment and processing

Both roles require similar educational backgrounds and certifications, often working in natural gas facilities. The main difference is that Lng Process Engineers focus on liquefaction processes for LNG production, while Gas Processing Engineers work on natural gas treatment and processing before liquefaction or pipeline transport.

Job description

WHY VEIR?
Founded in 2019 and headquartered in Woburn, Massachusetts, VEIR is a U.S.-based designer and manufacturer of category-defining superconducting power delivery systems built for the extreme energy demands of the AI era. By commercializing next-generation superconducting technology into deployable, real-world systems, VEIR delivers ~10ร— higher power density than conventional options, enabling "speed-to-power" where incremental optimization falls short. VEIR's initial focus is AI data centers behind the meter, with solutions engineered for repeatable deployment through reference designs and integrated controls, designed to incorporate learnings as deployments scale.
The Role
VEIR is looking for a Senior Process Engineer with deep expertise in cryogenic systems to join our engineering team. This is a system-level role: you will own the thermal and fluid architecture of our cryogenic cooling systems, from first-principles calculations through equipment specification, vendor engagement, and operational documentation. You will work across the engineering organization to ensure our systems are designed, specified, and ready to be built and operated reliably.
You are not a narrowly scoped component engineer. You are someone who can hold the full picture, ask the right questions of vendors, sanity-check a P&ID, and write the documentation that bridges design and operations. Experience in oil and gas (LNG), industrial gas, fusion energy, or space launch is directly applicable. Cryogenic-specific experience is a strong differentiator, but candidates with equivalent thermofluids depth who have built real systems will be seriously considered.
This role reports to the Technical Lead - Cryogenic Systems and joins a small, high-output team where broad ownership and cross-functional collaboration are expected from day one.
In the first 3 months you'll
  • Review and develop a working understanding of VEIR's cryogenic system designs, existing documentation, and outstanding technical questions.
  • Complete engineering calculations or reports on at least two high-priority system problems, such as liquid nitrogen tank thermal management or manifold flow distribution.
  • Build relationships with your cross-functional counterparts in mechanical, electrical, and systems engineering.
  • Begin contributing to P&ID reviews, identifying gaps or inconsistencies in current design documentation.

In the first 6 months you'll
  • Own equipment specification and vendor qualification for one or more cryogenic subsystems, including selection of pumps, heat exchangers, tanks, or flow control components.
  • Produce formal calculation reports or technical memos that support design decisions and are suitable for design review.
  • Actively contribute to process safety reviews (HAZOP or equivalent) for relevant subsystems.
  • Begin taking on design and analysis tasks within the 1.0 low voltage product program with limited oversight.

By the end of the first year, you will have
  • Lead a cross-functional technical effort, coordinating internally and with external partners to resolve a complex system-level engineering question.
  • Own the process engineering documentation library for assigned subsystems, including operating procedures, maintenance guidelines, and specification records.
  • Be a recognized internal resource for cryogenic and thermal systems expertise, supporting design decisions across the 1.0 and HTS product lines.
  • Demonstrate the ability to scope, structure, and independently drive engineering investigations from problem definition through to a documented, decision-ready output.

To be successful in this role
You bring:
  • 6 to 8 years of experience in process or systems engineering, with a focus on thermofluids-intensive systems. Mechanical or chemical engineering degree required.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in heat transfer, thermodynamics, and fluid systems design, including cryogenic or low-temperature applications.
  • Hands-on experience reading, creating, and reviewing P&IDs and PFDs, with fluency in standard instrumentation and equipment symbols.
  • Experience specifying and procuring major equipment items, including pumps, heat exchangers, cryogenic tanks, and associated controls.
  • A track record of producing engineering documentation: calculation reports, equipment specifications, operating procedures, or design basis memos.
  • Some exposure to process safety review methodologies (HAZOP, FMEA, or equivalent).
  • Experience from oil and gas (specifically LNG), industrial gas, fusion energy, or space launch is directly relevant to the work here.

Nice to have:
  • Direct cryogenic systems experience, specifically with liquid nitrogen, liquid hydrogen, or liquid oxygen handling.
  • Field experience observing or participating in system construction, commissioning, or startup, and feeding those lessons back into design.
  • Familiarity with the full project lifecycle: from concept and design through procurement, construction oversight, and commissioning.

You are:
  • A systems thinker who can hold the full picture of a complex fluid system while knowing which details matter most.
  • Comfortable working with ambiguity and incomplete information, structuring engineering problems before solving them.
  • Skilled at communicating technical findings clearly in writing and in cross-functional settings.
  • Energized by the pace and ownership that comes with an early-stage, high-impact deep tech environment.
  • Collaborative and straightforward: you share what you know, ask when you don't, and hold yourself accountable to your commitments.

VEIR is committed to equal pay for equal work in its compensation practices. The base salary range for this position in the U.S. is $130,000 - $160,000 per year + equity + benefits. A candidate's salary is determined by various factors including, but not limited to, relevant work experience, skills, certifications, job level, supervisory status, and location.
BENEFITS & PERKS
Healthcare coverage with 100% employer paid premiums for medical, dental, and vision
401(k) Retirement Savings Program
