What does an LMSW PRN do?

An LMSW PRN is a Licensed Master Social Worker who works on an as-needed, or 'per diem,' basis rather than having a regular, full-time schedule. They provide social work services such as counseling, case management, and support in settings like hospitals, clinics, or social service agencies. PRN social workers fill in for staff shortages, assist during busy periods, or cover for employees on leave. Their responsibilities can include assessing clients’ needs, connecting them with resources, and collaborating with healthcare teams to support patient well-being.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as an LMSW PRN?

To thrive as an LMSW PRN (Licensed Master Social Worker, Per Diem), you need a master's degree in social work, state licensure (LMSW), and a solid understanding of clinical assessment and case management. Familiarity with electronic health records (EHRs), documentation software, and crisis intervention protocols is typically required. Strong interpersonal communication, empathy, and adaptability are essential soft skills for engaging with diverse clients and collaborating with interdisciplinary teams. These skills and qualifications are crucial to provide effective, flexible support and ensure continuity of care in a variety of healthcare or social service settings.

How does working as an LMSW PRN differ from a full-time LMSW in team collaboration and scheduling?

As an LMSW PRN (Licensed Master Social Worker on an as-needed basis), you'll experience a flexible schedule, often filling in during peak times or staff shortages. While you may not have the same routine or case continuity as full-time staff, you'll still collaborate closely with interdisciplinary teams, including nurses, physicians, and case managers. PRN roles require strong communication skills and adaptability to quickly understand patient needs and contribute effectively, even with limited prior contact. This role offers valuable exposure to diverse cases and work environments, which can be beneficial for professional growth.
