What is an LMS engineer?

LMS Engineers are professionals who specialize in the implementation, customization, maintenance, and support of Learning Management Systems (LMS) for organizations. They ensure that the LMS platform functions smoothly, integrates with other systems, and meets the unique training or educational requirements of users. Their responsibilities often include managing user access, troubleshooting technical issues, deploying updates, and sometimes developing new features or plugins. LMS Engineers work closely with instructional designers, administrators, and IT teams to deliver an effective online learning experience.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an LMS engineer?

To thrive as an LMS Engineer, you need strong technical expertise in learning management systems (such as Moodle, Canvas, or Blackboard), programming skills (often in PHP, JavaScript, or Python), and a background in computer science or a related field. Experience with database management, system integration, and relevant certifications like CompTIA or vendor-specific credentials are commonly required. Excellent problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help you collaborate with educators, administrators, and IT teams. These abilities ensure the efficient deployment, customization, and support of LMS platforms, directly impacting the learning experience and organizational goals.

What are some common challenges faced by LMS engineers when integrating new learning tools or systems?

LMS Engineers often encounter challenges when integrating new learning tools, such as compatibility issues between the LMS and third-party applications, ensuring data security and privacy, and meeting the unique needs of diverse user groups. Troubleshooting technical glitches and coordinating with vendors or internal teams to resolve integration issues can also be demanding. Successfully navigating these challenges requires strong problem-solving skills, clear communication, and a good understanding of both the existing LMS infrastructure and the new tools being implemented.

Job description

Role Overview The HR & AI Systems Architect is a senior technical leadership role responsible for shaping and evolving Fortive's HR technology ecosystem. Reporting to the Director of HR Technology (Engineering & Platform), this position sits at the intersection of HR systems, enterprise integration, and AI innovation, leading architecture decisions across Oracle HCM Cloud, Boomi, ServiceNow HRSD, Eightfold, LMS platforms, and the broader IT landscape. This role is the primary technical authority for HR platform architecture - defining how systems connect, how AI augments HR workflows, and how data flows reliably across the enterprise.

The architect partners closely with HR Product Owners, IT/Enterprise Architecture, and vendor teams to deliver scalable, future-ready solutions that support Fortive's operating companies and HR functions globally. Core Technology Landscape Oracle HCM Suite Boomi Middleware ServiceNow HRSD Eightfold AI Platform LMS Solutions Integration APIs Power BI Reporting Oracle Analytics Key Responsibilities 1. HR Systems & Platform Architecture Own the end-to-end architectural design of Fortive's HR technology landscape, including Oracle HCM Cloud (Core HR, Payroll, Talent, Compensation, Benefits), ServiceNow HRSD, Eightfold, and LMS platforms.

Develop and maintain architectural blueprints, data flow diagrams, and modernization roadmaps aligned to cloud-native, API-first principles. Establish design standards, governance frameworks, and best practices across the HR tech portfolio. Partner with IT's Azure-based infrastructure teams to ensure HR systems align with enterprise architecture standards and security posture.

2. Integration Architecture & Engineering Define and drive integration strategy across HR systems, moving from point-to-point patterns toward reusable, API-first services. Lead architecture and hands-on implementation using Boomi (atoms, molecules, connectors, process routing) as the primary middleware platform.

Design scalable integration patterns - real-time APIs, event-driven integrations, and batch/file-based flows - connecting Oracle HCM to Eightfold, LMS, payroll, benefits, and IT/ERP systems. Maintain data integrity, auditability, and compliance (GDPR, SOC 2, HIPAA) across all integration flows. Supervise and guide integration developers through the full development lifecycle, including code reviews, design reviews, and documentation standards.

3. AI Solutions & Automation Identify and deliver high-value AI and automation use cases across the HR lifecycle - intelligent onboarding, workflow automation, AI-assisted case triage, talent insights, and conversational self-service. Architect and implement AI capabilities within Oracle HCM Cloud, Eightfold's talent intelligence platform, and ServiceNow HRSD.

Build and prototype solutions leveraging HR-specific AI platforms, taking ideas from POC to production. Embed AI/ML, NLP, and chatbot capabilities into HR workflows and digital employee experience channels, aligned with enterprise AI governance standards. Establish AI performance monitoring and responsible AI frameworks for HR use cases.

4. Data Architecture & Governance Design HR data models, master data management (MDM) strategies, and data lineage documentation in partnership with Data Engineering and BI teams. Enable secure, governed access to HR data for analytics (Power BI, Oracle Analytics).

Define and enforce HR data contracts, quality standards, and privacy controls across all systems and integration points. 5. Stakeholder Leadership & Collaboration Serve as the primary technical advisor to HR leadership, Product Owners, and IT on HR technology architecture, AI strategy, and platform decisions.

Translate complex architecture and AI concepts into clear business outcomes tied to KPIs and strategic priorities. Provide technical guidance on vendor selection and partnership for Oracle, ServiceNow, Eightfold, and integration tooling. Collaborate with HR Centers of Excellence (Talent Acquisition, L&D, Total Rewards) to embed AI capabilities within HR programs.

Qualifications Required 10-12 years of progressive experience in HR technology and enterprise systems architecture. Must be available to work full U.S. Eastern Time (EST) hours each day

Deep expertise in Oracle HCM Cloud, including integrations, HCM Extracts, Security, and configuration across at least three functional modules. Proven experience with Boomi or a similar enterprise integration platform (Dell Boomi preferred), including building and supporting production integrations. Strong understanding of integration patterns, including REST and SOAP APIs, event-driven architecture, synchronous and asynchronous processing, and data transformation.

Demonstrated success designing and deploying AI/ML and automation solutions within HR or other enterprise business systems. Experience delivering AI/ML and automation solutions within HR systems. Experience with digital assistants or AI-driven employee experience platforms is a plus.

Experience with ServiceNow HRSD, including case management, virtual agent, and HR service delivery configuration. Experience leading or mentoring small technical teams, including integration engineers and developers. Preferred Hands-on experience with Eightfold AI or comparable talent intelligence platforms.

Experience with LMS platform architecture (e.g., Absorb, Cornerstone, or similar). Background in Agile/SAFe delivery, DevOps practices, and CI/CD for integration pipelines. Experience with RPA tools (UiPath, Automation Anywhere) and Oracle Integration Cloud (OIC)

Familiarity with Power BI, Oracle Analytics Cloud, or enterprise BI architecture for HR data products. Knowledge of enterprise AI governance, responsible AI frameworks, and data privacy regulations (GDPR, HIPAA). What Success Looks Like In the first 90 days, you will have mapped the current HR architecture landscape, identified integration gaps and technical debt, and proposed a prioritized modernization roadmap.

Within the first year, you will have elevated integration maturity toward API-first and reusable services, shipped at least two meaningful AI-powered HR use cases into production, and established architectural standards that guide the broader HR engineering team.
