Live Stream Director information

What does a live stream director do?

A Live Stream Director is responsible for overseeing and managing the technical and creative aspects of live streaming events, such as concerts, conferences, or broadcasts. They coordinate camera angles, audio feeds, graphics, and transitions to ensure a smooth, professional live broadcast. This role often involves working with a production team, troubleshooting technical issues in real time, and making quick decisions to maintain broadcast quality. Live Stream Directors typically use specialized software and equipment to control the stream and may also collaborate with event organizers to plan the production in advance.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a live stream director, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Live Stream Director, you need expertise in video production, live event management, and streaming platforms, often supported by experience in broadcast or digital media. Strong leadership, quick decision-making, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for managing teams and handling live broadcast challenges. The fast-paced nature of live events means directors must make quick decisions to maintain broadcast quality and adapt to last-minute changes. A strong understanding of streaming platforms, switching software, and contingency planning is essential to address these challenges effectively.

Job description

OVERVIEW OF THE COMPANY
Fox TV Stations
FOX Television Stations owns and operates 29 full power broadcast television stations in the U.S. These include stations located in 14 of the top 15 largest designated market areas, or DMAs, and duopolies in 11 DMAs, including the three largest DMAs (New York, Los Angeles and Chicago). Of these stations, 18 are affiliated with the FOX Network. In addition to distributing sports, entertainment and syndicated content, our television stations collectively produce approximately 1,200 hours of local news every week. These stations leverage viewer, distributor and advertiser demand for the FOX Network's national content.
JOB DESCRIPTION
FOX Television Stations is growing its streaming operation, and the Florida region is a critical part of that growth. This role sits at the center of that effort - serving as the streaming authority for FOX Tampa (WTVT) and FOX Orlando (WOFL), responsible for building and evolving a high-performing local streaming operation across both markets.
Reporting to the News Director(s) at WTVT & WOFL, this position works in close partnership with FTS Streaming and weather leadership to align regional execution with broader FTS strategy and the Executive Producers of both FL stations. As the streaming team grows and the business evolves, so will this role - expanding in scope, team size, and responsibility. The right candidate is someone who is ready to grow with it.
This is a role for a streaming-first leader who understands where the industry is heading, knows how to bring a newsroom along on that journey, and has the editorial instincts, technical fluency, and analytical rigor to drive measurable growth across the full streaming universe - CTV, FAST channels, and social video.
A Snapshot of Your Responsibilities - Editorial & Content Leadership
  • Lead with a streaming-first mindset across both newsrooms, driving editorial vision, cultural adoption, and a commitment to continuous content improvement.
  • Make fast, sound editorial decisions in breaking news environments, balancing urgency with accuracy.
  • Manage and evolve streaming programming schedules across Tampa and Orlando, working toward expanded hours and a long-term 24/7 weather and streaming operation at both stations.
  • Elevate content quality at every level - from live breaking news to long-form storytelling - with an eye toward what works for a streaming-native audience.
  • Operate fluidly across digital and streaming, shaping content intentionally for each format and platform.

Team Development & Newsroom Adoption
  • Motivate, coach, and develop a team of streaming journalists and producers in Tampa, and support alignment with the Orlando & Tampa Executive Producers of Streaming.
  • Serve as the leading voice in both newsrooms for streaming adoption - building buy-in, growing participation, and helping teams evolve their workflows and mindset to support expanded streaming output.
  • Partner with the station and FTS Executive Director of Streaming to identify opportunities to grow the team and the operation over time.

Analytics & Performance Reporting
  • Own streaming performance data and reporting for the FL region across all platforms - including FOX Local CTV, FAST channels, YouTube, social video, and weather.
  • Produce regular growth reports for both stations, surfacing trends, opportunities, and areas that need attention.
  • Use real-time and historical data to inform editorial decisions, optimize audience engagement, and support the case for expanded resources and investment in the region.
  • Provide regular performance and strategy updates to FTS Streaming leadership to ensure regional activity is visible and aligned with company goals.

Technology & Distribution
  • Master and expand the use of TriCaster and all streaming production technology across both markets.
  • Maintain a comprehensive understanding of the full streaming distribution landscape - CTV, FAST channels, and social video - and ensure both stations are operating effectively across all surfaces.
  • Prioritize the CTV viewer experience: ensure content is surfaced intentionally, programming decisions are made with audience growth in mind, and both stations are actively working to drive viewers toward longer-form, high-value content.
  • Stay attuned to how platforms, discovery mechanisms, and viewer habits are shifting, and bring that awareness into day-to-day and long-term planning.

Strategy & Industry Awareness
  • Serve as the regional expert on streaming industry trends - platform evolution, audience behavior, competitive landscape, and emerging opportunities.
  • Develop and execute short- and long-term streaming growth strategies for the FL region, aligned with FTS goals and built to adapt as the industry and business change.
  • Collaborate across FOX and with external content partners, contributors, and creators to expand live coverage opportunities.

What You Will Need
  • 5+ years in a digital or broadcast news leadership role; live streaming or CTV experience strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the full streaming landscape: CTV, FAST channels, OTT platforms, social video, and mobile apps.
  • Proven ability to lead teams through high-stakes breaking news and live events.
  • Strong analytical skills with experience building and presenting performance reports across multiple streaming platforms and distribution surfaces.
  • Deep understanding of CTV user experience and content distribution strategy, with a viewer-first approach to programming and platform decisions.
  • Proficiency with streaming production technology; TriCaster experience strongly preferred.
  • A streaming-first editorial mindset with the ability to work fluidly across digital, and streaming formats.
  • Current knowledge of streaming industry trends, audience behavior shifts, and platform evolutions.
  • Excellent editorial judgment and strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to drive newsroom culture change and build enthusiasm for streaming at all levels.
  • Flexibility to work varied hours, weekends, and holidays as news demands.
