Utility Locator
The Utility Locator is will be responsible for identifying and marking gas, water and sewer lines by referencing utility prints and using specific locating equipment. The candidate must be flexible to work in all types of terrain and weather conditions, able to succeed under stressful situations, and always professionally conduct him or herself. The candidate must also be motivated to work independently and demonstrate good time management skills to plan and accomplish assigned work load as required.
RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Works safely, follows safe work practices, and identifies and reports unsafe work conditions.
  • Locates underground utility lines specified by the client.
  • Interpret job order tickets, email requests, phone calls, blueprints and maps to efficiently route and perform duties
  • Uses utility maps, as-built civil engineering drawings, GIS information and various pipe and electronic locating equipment.
  • Utilizes stakes, flags, and/or paint to mark the location of underground utilities.
  • Prepares various reports, forms, and memos to document work completed, and problems encountered and/or resolved.
  • Verifies field's information and notifies the designated City departments regarding updates and corrections.
  • Develop a knowledge and understanding of the underground facilities infrastructure.
  • Operate company vehicle in a safe manner and according to vehicle policy.
  • Perform work in all weather conditions, during normal and after hours
  • Perform other duties as deemed necessary by the supervisor.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS
Education/Experience: High School Diploma or GED. 1-year utility location experience and/or 2-3 years water/wastewater experience preferred.
Licenses/Certifications: Valid Driver's License. C Operator Distribution/Collection System Operator license preferred or C Operator Water/Wastewater License. Other licenses may vary according to specific site and assignments.
Technical: Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Office applications & internet. Ability to work with tablet and mobile devices. Working knowledge of OSHA requirements, DOT regulations & Utility SOPs. Proficiency completing all regulatory documentation, reports and correspondence.
Communication: Communicates clearly & professionally when interacting with homeowners, contractors, and utility representatives. Contributes to a positive internal & external customer experience. Maintains composure in challenging situations. Collaborates with others. Asks for constructive feedback. Promotes a culture of diversity, respect & accountability. Challenges other through productive discussion.
Problem Solving & Quality: Pays attention to detail. Identifies & solves complex issues. Interprets drawings, plans, and GIS information to best identify utility lines. Develops innovative & creative solutions.
Managing For Results: Follows all company policies & SOPs. Delegates, prioritizes & manages the work. Balances competing priorities, scheduling issues & deadlines. Delivers effective feedback.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Must be able to: frequently lift 40-50 pounds; load, unload & move equipment/tools; will require sitting, squatting, bending, crawling, climbing, and reaching. The incumbent may be required to occasionally perform a full range of motion with lifting and/or carrying items weighing up to 50 pounds. Ability to work in all types of terrain and hazards (grass, gravel, ditches, etc.), all types of environments (construction sites, highways, industrial, private property, etc.) and all types of weather conditions
WORKING ENVIRONMENT
Ability to work in all types of terrain and hazards (grass, gravel, ditches, etc.), all types of environments (construction sites, highways, industrial, private property, etc.) and being in and around moving equipment. Activity is subject to weather conditions of the seasons, fumes, gasses, and exposure to dust.
