This role reports to the Head of SRE and partners closely with Platform, SRE, product engineering, and security. You will play a key role in keeping DrChrono's databases performant, secure, resilient, and ready for future modernization, including potential migration from AWS RDS to AWS Aurora. This role is ideal for a deeply experienced DBA who enjoys hands-on production work, complex performance troubleshooting, and improving the reliability of business-critical healthcare software.
Role Responsibilities
Manage Production Database Systems
  • Administer and support DrChrono's cloud database environments in AWS
  • Manage MariaDB on AWS RDS, including replica sets, replication health, backups, restores, configuration, and failover readiness
  • Use Bytebase to help administer database access, changes, and workflows
  • Participate in database-related production support, incident response, and RCAs
  • Support backup, restore, disaster recovery, and business continuity practices

Troubleshoot and Improve Performance
  • Lead hands-on troubleshooting of database performance issues in production
  • Analyze slow queries, locking, replication lag, indexing, connection behavior, and other workload patterns
  • Tune queries, indexes, schema patterns, and database configurations to improve performance and reliability
  • Partner with engineering teams to identify application-level database issues and recommend practical fixes
  • Help establish repeatable steps for diagnosing/resolving recurring database issues

Improve Reliability and Operational Discipline
  • Help define standards for database administration, access control, change management, and release support
  • Work closely with Platform Engineering, SRE, Product Engineering, Security teams
  • Communicate database risks, tradeoffs, and recommendations clearly
  • Help engineering teams make sound decisions when designing, changing, or scaling database-backed systems
  • Strengthen database availability, recoverability, and operational readiness
  • Support capacity planning, scaling decisions, and database lifecycle management
  • Maintain clear documentation for database environments, operational procedures, and recovery processes
  • Partner with Security and Compliance teams to support secure handling of PHI

About You
  • Strong troubleshooting judgment and a practical approach to incident response
  • Ability to explain database issues, risks, and recommendations to technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • Strong collaboration skills with SRE, engineering, platform, and security teams
  • A bias toward improving reliability, repeatability, documentation, and long-term operational health

Target Experience
  • 8+ years of database administration experience in production software environments
  • Deep experience with MariaDB on AWS RDS
  • Strong experience with AWS Aurora
  • Hands-on experience administering AWS-hosted database services
  • Strong experience troubleshooting database performance issues in production environments
  • Strong database performance tuning experience, including query analysis, indexing, locking, schema review, and workload optimization
  • Experience using Bytebase to administer databases, manage database changes, or support database workflows
  • Experience managing RDS replica sets, replication behavior, failover readiness, backups, restores, and production operations
  • Hands-on experience with Redis in production environments
  • Strong understanding of database reliability, capacity planning, disaster recovery, and operational best practices
  • Strong experience supporting SaaS, cloud-hosted, or high-availability database platforms
  • Experience working in healthcare technology, healthcare SaaS, or other regulated data environments (strongly preferred)
  • Experience supporting HIPAA-compliant systems and handling PHI securely (strongly preferred)
  • Experience partnering with SRE, DevOps, infrastructure, or platform engineering teams (strongly preferred)

Nice to Have Experience
