Position Overview and Responsibilities:
Fort Zachary Taylor Historic State Park is looking for a self-motivated park service professional to fill a Resident Assistant Park Manager position. This Resident Assistant Park Manager position requires an individual with strong leadership ability and resource management experience. The career staff of ten consists of Park Manager, Assistant Park Manager, six Park Rangers, one Administrative Assistant, and one Park Services Specialist. Supervises the park staff and participates in the management of the area's resources, facilities and public use under existing rules and operating policies to provide the proper levels of administration, resource management, visitor services, protection and maintenance. The applicant must be able to work nights, weekends and holidays.
In carrying out the duties of this position, the incumbent is expected at all times to be aware of and abide by the Department's Standards of Conduct, as well as any and all departmental and/or work unit rules, directives, policies, procedures, and/or general orders applicable to performing the duties of this position. If position is supervisory, incumbent is also expected to actively support and work toward fulfilling the Agency's Affirmative Action objectives. Compliance with the processing requirements of Chapter 215.422, F.S. is mandatory. Persistent failure to comply with this section by any agency of the state shall constitute good cause for discharge of employees duly found responsible, or predominantly responsible, for failure to comply.
Under the direction of the park manager, supervises the park staff in the management of the area's resources, facilities and public use.
ADMINISTRATION
Participates in employee training, supervision and discipline. Supervises the staff in fiscal and purchasing procedures and policies. Ensures property procedures and policies are applied. Participates in the administration of the collective bargaining agreement and maintains good employee relations. Coordinates work schedules and assignments. Checks reports, fee collection and miscellaneous records prepared by the staff.
VISITOR SERVICES
Coordinates interpretive programs, activities and schedules for park unit. Meets the public, interprets the resources, facilities and services, resolves problems and provides for good public relations. Supervises the staff in providing visitor services.
RESOURCE MANAGEMENT
Participates in the supervision of resource management programs applicable to park unit including coastal resources, marine environment, cultural and history, and other natural resources management, native species propagation, exotic removal, coastal stabilization, buoy maintenance, marine monitoring and enhancement, historic structure maintenance, artifact preservation, and public education.
MAINTENANCE
Identifies maintenance needs through daily inspections. Maintains maintenance schedules and supervises the staff to ensure maintenance on a daily, weekly and yearly basis is regularly performed. Supervises and assists with the maintenance of buildings, roads, bridges, trails, water systems, wastewater systems, vehicles, equipment, etc.
PROTECTION
Ensures park rules are enforced pertaining to all natural, historical and archaeological facilities and resources and use thereof, for the enjoyment of the visitor.
May volunteer to snorkel.
Performs other related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Valid driver's license
  • Must have prior approval and pass DEP approved training course to snorkel, as to DEP underwater operations manual.

Position of Special Trust Requirement:
This position is designated as a Position of Special Trust in accordance with DEP Directive 422, Positions of Special Trust or Responsibility. Successful completion of background screening will be required for this position.
Pay:
$3,740.67 monthly/$44,888.08 annually

A true one-of-a-kind experience, visiting Fort Taylor not only provides a magnificent natural setting to bird-watch or swim but also to immerse yourself in history.
On the southern edge of Key West, Fort Taylor predates the Civil War and is a National Historic Monument housing the largest cache of Civil War armament in the world. Beyond its historical importance, the park is the southernmost state park in the continental United States.
Walk the red-brick corridors of Fort Zachary Taylor, past cannon and gun ports, and history becomes more real than books and photos can depict. One better grasps how soldiers lived as they defended the nation's southeastern coastline.
Tour guides and interpretive panels explain how the fort played important roles in the Civil War and Spanish-American War.
History is front and center the third weekend of each month as local re-enactors conduct historic demonstrations.
The park also boasts Key West's favorite beach, located at the southern end of the park, providing opportunities for picnicking, swimming, snorkeling, paddling and fishing.
