We're hiring a Mule Packer to Live. Work. Explore. at the South Rim of the Grand Canyon!

Job Summary:

Safe and efficient packing of mules and supplies.

The Details:Position Type: Full-Time, Year-RoundPay: $19.75 per hourSchedule: Typical schedule is 40 hours, 5 days/per week (may include weekends, evenings, and holidays)

Housing: Eligible for a private bedroom in a shared apartment for $267.00 per month. This covers rent and basic utilities.

Responsibilities
  • Prepare packs for delivery from the Rim to Phantom Ranch and back.
  • Properly dispose of waste/recycled items from Phantom Ranch.
  • Pack duffels for hikers, boat parties, etc.
  • Note special delivery items for the Ranch such as maintenance supplies.
  • Assist Phantom Ranch personnel as needed with unloading/loading of packs.
  • Feed and water mules at the Yaki barn, and maintain cleanliness and orderliness of the Yaki barn and corral.
  • Advise the Packer Supervisor or Livery Manager of condition of the pack string.
  • Repair packing gear as necessary and report defective equipment to the Packer Supervisor.
  • Adhere to all safety and risk management policies while performing tasks.
  • Overnight stays at Phantom Ranch may be required from time to time. Based on the mixed-gender nature of the Trail crews and limited employee housing at the bottom of the Canyon, employees may be required to share room accommodations with team members of the opposite sex. Employees will have access to gender-specific shower and restroom facilities, but will be expected to sleep in a co-ed bunk house.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Three years of experience handling horses or mules, and proven equestrian skills.
  • Previous packing experience.
  • Must have own saddle and tack.
  • Ability to learn two-way radio communication equipment.
  • Ability to work non-traditional work hours.
  • Ability to safely lift 100 pounds on a regular basis.
