Position Summary:

The Specialist I, Process Safety supports the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of process safety programs for lithium-ion battery manufacturing operations. This position supports Process Safety Management (PSM), high-risk equipment safety, construction and contractor safety, emergency preparedness, and regulatory compliance. The Specialist partners with Engineering, Maintenance, Production, and other cross-functional teams to identify and mitigate chemical, thermal, mechanical, and equipment-related hazards while supporting safe, compliant, and reliable plant operations.

  • Support the implementation, ongoing management, and continuous improvement of Process Safety Management (PSM) programs applicable to battery manufacturing processes.
  • Maintain process safety documentation, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and safety controls related to battery manufacturing hazards.
  • Support safety programs for high-risk equipment and assist with inspection, testing, and preventive maintenance requirements in coordination with Engineering and Maintenance teams.
  • Participate in annual and long-term Process Safety planning, including risk management programs, incident response strategies, and departmental improvement initiatives.
  • Support construction safety activities for capital expansion, equipment installation, and infrastructure projects. Support contractor qualification, onboarding, orientation, and field audits to verify compliance with company and regulatory safety requirements.
  • Maintain safety data, metrics, dashboards, and key performance indicators (KPIs) and prepare compliance and performance reports as required.
  • Develop and deliver training related to process safety, equipment safety, and emergency procedures.
  • Assist with emergency response planning and participate in tabletop and field drills with applicable teams.
  • Support internal and external regulatory audits and assist with the timely closure of findings and corrective actions.
  • Participate in hazard identification and risk assessment activities, including Management of Change (MOC), Process Hazard Analysis (PHA/HAZOP), Pre-Startup Safety Review (PSSR), and mechanical integrity activities.
  • Identify and support continuous improvement opportunities that strengthen process safety and operational safety across the plant.
  • Follow LGESMI existing cleaning SOPs during downtime (e.g., line stop, waiting time), including cleaning designated equipment and/or surrounding work areas.
  • Maintain cleanliness at work-site in accordance with 5S3R Standards:
    • Sort, Set in order, Shine, Standardize, Sustain
    • Right Location, Right Quantity, Right Container
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelorโ€™s degree in Environmental Health & Safety, Occupational Safety, Engineering, Environmental Science, or a related field.
  • 1โ€“3+ years of experience in process safety, environmental health and safety, chemical processing, battery manufacturing, or a related highโ€‘hazard manufacturing environment.
  • Knowledge of process safety principles and practices applicable to manufacturing operations.
  • Knowledge of OSHA and applicable state and local safety regulations and requirements.
  • Knowledge of hazard identification and risk assessment methodologies.
  • Ability to review and understand technical safety documentation and processโ€‘related information.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working with Process Safety Management elements, including MOC, PHA/HAZOP, PSSR, or mechanical integrity.
  • Experience with lithiumโ€‘ion battery manufacturing hazards, including NMP, thermal runaway risks, and electrolyte handling and storage.
  • Experience with emergency response for industrial chemical or thermal incidents.
  • Experience supporting construction safety, contractor safety, or capital equipment installation projects.
  • Experience working in lithiumโ€‘ion battery manufacturing or a similar highโ€‘hazard manufacturing environment.
  • Familiarity with engineering drawings, P&IDs, ventilation diagrams, and safety interlock systems.
  • Knowledge of EPA, NFPA, and chemical safety requirements applicable to manufacturing operations.

Work Environment & Physical Requirements:

  • Work is performed in office and manufacturing environments with regular presence on the production floor.
  • Frequent use of computers, phones, and other standard office equipment.
  • Ability to sit, stand, walk, and move throughout manufacturing and project areas for extended periods as required.
  • Ability to navigate active manufacturing, construction, and equipment installation areas.
  • May be exposed to industrial equipment, chemicals, noise, and other manufacturing hazards while performing process safety responsibilities.
  • Must comply with applicable safety requirements and use required personal protective equipment (PPE) in designated areas.
  • Flexible hours may be required to support production operations, project activities, audits, training, or emergency response needs.
