About this opportunity:
Cenovus Energy is now hiring for a Senior Staff Process and Technical Safety Engineer who will be accountable for the overall implementation and application of Process Safety as a competency within the US Refineries & for supporting policy development/application beyond the US. This role will serve as the US Region's leading SME and thought leader in the field of Process Safety; will also play a dual role in leading the company's overall PSM expertise with Canadian counterpart(s).
What you'll do:
Responsibilities for this position may include but are not limited to:
  • Lead Process Safety as a competency across the US Refineries-owning methodology development, regulatory and code interpretation, and industry policy representation
  • Build and develop competent, capable Process Safety Engineers trained in Cenovus Risk Methodology (HAZOP, LOPA, HAZID, etc.)
  • Design, deliver, and maintain a comprehensive risk-training suite for site personnel, including QA/QC of site deliverables and the ongoing development of new team members
  • Champion and safeguard key risk standards across the organization (PHA standard, RMP compliance, etc.)
  • Directly conduct/coordinate centrally managed third-party studies (Facility Siting, Fire Hazard Analysis, etc.)
  • Drive and support assurance audits within the PSM space

Who you are:
  • Legally authorized to work in the US
  • Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a closely related engineering discipline required
  • 16+ years working directly in a Process Safety role or closely related discipline required; 10+ years within Oil and Gas/Petrochemicals considered an asset; Functional Safety Engineer Certification considered an asset
  • Experience leading multiple complex unit HAZOPs and MOCs for a chemical/oil and gas operator, and conducting LOPA analyses with translation into SIL requirements required
  • Experience in process safety information auditing or RAGAGEP verification required
  • Experience in consequence modelling required (experience with PHAST software considered an asset)
  • Familiarity with API, NFPA, and CCPS codes & US regulations required. Familiarity with RMP compliance required
  • Experience with Fire Hazard Analysis techniques, QRA and facility siting studies, Barrier Health / Safety Critical Element / Bowtie / HAZID concepts, and PSM in projects considered an asset
