Do live-in housekeepers still exist?

Yes, live-in housekeepers are still employed in many households, especially in luxury or large homes. They typically work full-time, often with a set schedule, and may need to have relevant experience or certifications in cleaning and household management.

What is a live in housekeeper?

Live in housekeepers are professional domestic workers who reside in their employer's home and are responsible for maintaining the cleanliness and organization of the household. Their duties often include cleaning, laundry, grocery shopping, meal preparation, and sometimes assisting with childcare or pet care. In exchange for their work, live in housekeepers typically receive room and board, as well as a salary. They may work for families, individuals, or in larger estates, and their roles can be tailored to meet the specific needs of each household. The arrangement provides both the employer and the housekeeper with consistency and flexibility in household management.

What are the common challenges faced by a live in housekeeper and how can they be managed?

A Live In Housekeeper often encounters challenges such as maintaining boundaries between personal and professional time, adapting to the household's routines, and ensuring clear communication with employers. Managing these challenges involves setting expectations early, establishing a schedule with designated time off, and having regular check-ins with the household to address concerns or changes in duties. Building trust and mutual respect with the household members greatly contributes to a positive and sustainable work environment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a live in housekeeper, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Live In Housekeeper, you need strong cleaning skills, attention to detail, and experience in household management, often supported by prior housekeeping or hospitality roles. Familiarity with cleaning products, laundry equipment, and sometimes smart home systems or inventory management tools is beneficial. Reliability, discretion, and strong communication help build trust and facilitate smooth interactions with household members. These skills ensure a well-maintained home environment and foster a positive, professional relationship with employers.

What does a live in housekeeper do?

A live in housekeeper performs many of the same duties as a worker who is part of a maid service. The major difference is that as a live in housekeeper, you live in the home of your client. Some live in housekeepers are part of the continuum of medical care. In these positions, you complete housekeeping duties that your client can no longer perform, such as doing the laundry, keeping the rooms clean, and running various errands. Other live in housekeepers are hired to maintain a tidy home for people who are too busy or who are away from home for extended periods.

How do you find a live-in housekeeper?

To find a live-in housekeeper, you can post job listings on specialized domestic staffing agencies, online job boards, or local classifieds. Screening candidates involves checking references, conducting interviews, and verifying experience and background to ensure they meet your household needs and schedule requirements.

Job description

Flexible PRN Live-In Caregiver – Work on Your Schedule

Do long hours, endless patients, or chaotic facility work leave you feeling overworked and underappreciated?

It doesn't have to be this way.

At Freedom Home Care, our PRN Live-In Caregivers provide one-on-one care in a client's home while enjoying the flexibility to choose the assignments that fit their schedule. Make a meaningful difference in someone's life while working with a supportive team that values the care you provide.

Please Read Before Applying

This is a true live-in caregiving position—not a traditional overnight shift. Live-in caregivers temporarily reside in the client's home for the entire scheduled assignment, which typically ranges from 2 consecutive days up to 1 week. Because clients require continuous care, caregivers must remain in the home throughout the assignment and may only leave after being relieved by another approved caregiver or when coverage has been arranged by the office.

Why You'll Love Working With Us
  • Work on Your Terms – Accept only the live-in assignments that fit your schedule.
  • Meaningful One-on-One Care – Build genuine relationships while helping clients remain safely in their homes.
  • Supportive Team – Our office staff is available to support you throughout every assignment.
  • Competitive Pay – Earn $250 per day while providing compassionate, personalized care.
What You'll Do
  • Provide personal care and assistance with activities of daily living.
  • Prepare meals and assist with light housekeeping.
  • Offer companionship and emotional support.
  • Follow each client's individualized care plan.
  • Monitor and report changes in the client's condition.
  • Help clients remain safe, comfortable, and independent in their own home.
What Does "Live-In" Mean?

A live-in assignment means you will temporarily live in the client's home for the duration of your scheduled assignment. This is not a traditional 8- or 12-hour shift.

During your assignment you will:

  • Live in the client's home until your assignment ends.
  • Have your own designated sleeping accommodations.
  • Sleep overnight while remaining available if the client needs assistance.
  • Receive breaks and downtime as the client's care needs allow.
  • Remain in the home throughout the assignment to ensure the client is never left alone.

Example: If you accept a 4-day assignment beginning Monday at 11:00 AM, you will remain in the client's home until Friday at 11:00 AM (or until your scheduled relief arrives), providing care, companionship, and support throughout your stay.

Schedule
  • PRN Live-In Assignments
  • Assignments typically range from 2 consecutive days up to 1 week
  • Most assignments begin at 11:00 AM
  • Caregivers remain in the client's home for the duration of the assignment.
  • Flexible scheduling—you choose which assignments to accept.
Qualifications
  • Previous live-in, overnight, home care, or caregiving experience is a must.
  • Compassionate, dependable, and professional.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Reliable vehicle.
  • Current auto insurance.
  • Ability to pass a Minnesota Background Study.
Why Choose Freedom Home Care?
  • Top pay in the area.
  • Flexible scheduling that works around your life.
  • One-on-one client care—no facility chaos.
  • Career advancement opportunities.
  • Specialized Parkinson's and Dementia training.
  • Supportive leadership team.
  • Caregiver appreciation events.
  • A company culture that truly values its caregivers.
Proudly Recognized As
  • Employer of Choice (2022–2026)
  • Provider of Choice (2023–2025)
Perks & Benefits
  • Early access to earned wages.
  • Simple IRA with company match.
  • Free uniforms.
  • Food and snacks.
  • Ongoing education and training.
  • Employee appreciation events.
  • Opportunities for career growth.
