What is a live in HHA?

Live In Home Health Aides (HHAs) are trained caregivers who reside in a client’s home to provide round-the-clock assistance with daily living activities, such as bathing, dressing, meal preparation, and medication reminders. They also offer companionship and help ensure a safe living environment. Live In HHAs are especially beneficial for individuals who require continuous support due to age, illness, or disability.

What does a typical day look like for a live in HHA, and how is the work schedule structured?

As a Live-In Home Health Aide (HHA), your day usually begins by assisting your client with morning routines such as bathing, dressing, and preparing breakfast. Throughout the day, you may help with medication reminders, light housekeeping, meal preparation, and providing companionship. The schedule often involves extended hours on-site, with designated breaks and sleep periods. Many agencies arrange for relief aides to cover days off, ensuring you have regular time to rest and recharge. Collaborating closely with family members, nurses, and other caregivers is common to maintain continuity of care and address any changing needs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a live in home health aide (HHA), and why are they important?

To thrive as a Live-In HHA, you need a solid understanding of personal care, basic medical assistance, and often a state-approved HHA certification. Familiarity with electronic care documentation systems and basic medical devices like blood pressure monitors is typically required. Compassion, patience, strong communication, and the ability to adapt to clients’ changing needs are crucial soft skills. These competencies ensure client safety, comfort, and high-quality care in a home environment where trust and reliability are paramount.

Job description

Some clients smoke, some clients have pets, but all need a compassionate Care Pro to help them remain safe, comfortable, and independent at home.
Home Instead is hiring Care Professionals who have a heart for helping the elderly!
  • Work part-time or full-time
  • All clients live in Jeffersonville, Clarksville, New Albany, Sellersburg, Charlestown, Floyds Knobs, Georgetown, Greenville, Corydon, or Ramsey - no need to drive to Louisville for work!
  • Monday - Friday & weekend shifts - pick your schedule!

WE'RE LOOKING FOR SOMEONE WHO:
  • Has a passion for caregiving (and the patience to hear "that one story" on repeat)
  • Owns a reliable car + insurance (Southern Indiana locals, bonus points!)
  • Loves pets in the home and is not allergic
  • Doesn't mind smokers
  • Brings at least 6 months of senior care experience (and a great attitude)
  • Can laugh easily (Seriously, if you don't giggle at least once a day, this isn't the job for you)

WHAT YOU'LL DO (BESIDES BE AWESOME):
  • Provide personal care with dignity (Think VIP treatment, but with more sweatpants)
  • Master the art of listening (Even if it's the 10th time hearing about 1967)
  • Keep things tidy (Pro tip: Dancing while dusting makes it 50% more fun)
  • Document care like a boss (Tasks matter, but so does noting the day's gossip)

WHY YOU'LL LOVE IT:
  • Pay that respects your skills (Because "making someone's day better" deserves a paycheck)
  • Real team support (Not just a phone number - actual humans who've got your back 24/7)
  • No hospital or nursing home vibes (Just cozy homes, good chats, and zero drama llamas)
  • Weekly celebrations (Shout-outs, bonuses, and maybe surprise snacks - we appreciate you!)
