Job Description

Position Summary

The Heavy Equipment Operator is responsible for the safe, efficient operation of large mobile equipment used to support steelmill operations. This role plays a critical part in material movement, production support, and site safety. Operators work in a demanding industrial environment where strict safety compliance and operational precision are essential.

Key Responsibilities

  • Safely operate heavy equipment such as wheel loaders, dozers, excavators, cranes, locomotives, material handlers, haul trucks, and other support equipment
  • Support steelmill operations through material handling activities, including slag, scrap metal, raw materials, and finished byproducts
  • Perform preshift and postshift equipment inspections and report mechanical or safety concerns
  • Operate equipment in compliance with company policies, site procedures, and all applicable safety regulations
  • Maintain awareness of surroundings while working in active mill areas with moving equipment, rail traffic, and hightemperature processes
  • Communicate effectively with dispatch, supervisors, and maintenance personnel
  • Maintain clean, organized work areas and equipment cabs
  • Complete required production, inspection, and equipment operation documentation
  • Participate in safety meetings, job safety analyses (JSAs), and ongoing training programs
  • Assist with basic equipment care and minor operational adjustments as trained
Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED preferred
  • Minimum 1-3 years of experience operating heavy equipment in an industrial, steelmill, mining, construction, or related environment
  • Demonstrated ability to operate multiple types of heavy equipment safely and efficiently
  • Strong commitment to safety and compliance with workplace policies
  • Ability to understand and follow written and verbal instructions
  • Willingness to work rotating shifts, nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime as required
  • Valid driver's license; additional equipment certifications preferred

Physical & Work Environment Requirements

  • Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions
  • Ability to climb onto and off equipment, work at heights, and sit for extended periods
  • Tolerance for heat, noise, dust, vibration, and industrial operating conditions
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs with or without accommodation

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working within active steelmill or industrial processing environments
  • Familiarity with slag handling, materials logistics, or railbased operations
  • Equipment certifications or documented training
  • Basic mechanical knowledge for identifying operational issues
