Job Description
$29-$46 per hour based on experience
Position Summary
The Heavy Equipment Technician is responsible for maintaining, diagnosing, and repairing a wide range of heavy mobile and stationary equipment used in a steel mill environment. This role supports mill operations by ensuring equipment reliability, operational safety, and compliance with company and regulatory standards. The Technician will work on large, off-road and industrial equipment under demanding conditions where safety, precision, and uptime are critical.
Key Responsibilities
  • Perform preventive maintenance, diagnostics, troubleshooting, and repairs on heavy industrial equipment including wheel loaders, dozers, excavators, cranes, locomotives, material handlers, and support equipment
  • Inspect mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and powertrain systems to identify failures or performance issues
  • Repair or replace engines, transmissions, braking systems, hydraulic components, and electrical systems in accordance with OEM specifications
  • Utilize technical manuals, schematics, drawings, and service bulletins to perform accurate repairs and modifications
  • Conduct equipment inspections and document maintenance activities in accordance with company procedures
  • Work safely in active steel-mill operations, including high-temperature zones, outdoor environments, and around mobile equipment
  • Comply with all Harsco Environmental, OSHA, MSHA (if applicable), and site-specific safety regulations
  • Participate in safety meetings, job safety analyses (JSAs), and continuous improvement initiatives
  • Collaborate with operations and maintenance teams to minimize equipment downtime
  • Perform welding, cutting, and fabrication repairs as required (preferred)

Qualifications
Required Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or GED required; technical or vocational training preferred
  • Minimum 3+ years of experience maintaining heavy equipment in an industrial, mining, steel-mill, or construction environment
  • Strong mechanical aptitude with hands-on experience in:
    • Diesel and gasoline engines
    • Hydraulic and pneumatic systems
    • Electrical and electronic controls
    • Drivetrains and braking systems
  • Ability to work independently and make sound decisions in a fast-paced industrial environment
  • Proven commitment to workplace safety and hazard awareness
  • Ability to read, interpret, and apply technical documentation and OEM service procedures
  • Willingness to work rotating shifts, nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime as required

Physical & Work Environment Requirements
  • Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions
  • Ability to lift, push, or pull up to 50 lbs with or without accommodation
  • Tolerance for noise, dust, vibration, high heat, and industrial work conditions
  • Ability to climb ladders, work at heights, and work around moving equipment

Preferred Qualifications
  • Welding and fabrication experience
  • Experience working within active steel-mill operations
  • Familiarity with slag handling, materials handling, or rail-based industrial equipment
  • Certifications in heavy equipment repair, hydraulics, or electrical systems
