Manitowoc County On Call Deputy Coroner
Deputy Coroner Opportunities Available Now
Manitowoc County is seeking dedicated, professional, and detail-oriented individuals to serve as ON CALL Deputy Coroner within our forensic services team.
This is a unique opportunity to make a meaningful impact by serving the community through compassionate, professional death investigations and forensic support.
Position Responsibilities
Deputy Coroners are responsible for:
  • Investigating deaths throughout Manitowoc County
  • Ordering and assisting with autopsies
  • Conducting post-mortem examinations
  • Collecting and preserving evidence from decedents
  • Working closely with law enforcement, medical personnel, and forensic professionals
  • Providing respectful and professional interactions with families during difficult times
Scheduling & Availability
Deputy Coroners must commit to a minimum of 80 hours of on-call availability each month, including:
  • Nights
  • Weekends
  • Holidays
We're Looking For Individuals Who Are:
  • Prior medical experience
  • Calm and professional under pressure
  • Compassionate and respectful
  • Comfortable working independently and as part of a team
  • Interested in forensic science, investigations, or public service

Note - The elected position of Coroner will be replaced with an appointed Medical Examiner as of January 4, 2027. This will not change the need for these valuable positions.
Requirements
Requirements include:
  • A degree in a related field. (RN, Criminal Justice, Biology, Anthropology, Chemistry etc)
  • A medical background is extremely beneficial. Students in these programs may apply.
  • Knowledge of medications, physical assessments and medical records evaluation.
  • Confidentiality and the ability to tolerate unpleasant situations
  • Ability to work in stressful situations
  • Must own vehicle and have a valid Wisconsin drivers license
  • Ability to lift 100 lbs, pull, carry, squat, bend and walk on uneven surfaces.

Prior experience in evidence handling, investigatory experience, and forensic experience is extremely beneficial.
