What can you expect?

As the Core Driller, you will work onsite in Alaska and will be responsible for operating drilling equipment to extract core samples from the earth for geological, environmental, or mining studies. The position requires working in various conditions, including remote locations, and ensuring safe and efficient drilling operations. You will work closely with a drilling team to complete drilling tasks, maintain equipment, and record drilling data accurately. You will perform core drilling services for a seasonal mineral exploration project. This is a temporary position with an anticipated duration of approximately 5 to 8 months.

How will you do it?

  • Operate and maintain core drilling rigs to collect high-quality core samples for mineral exploration, adhering to project specifications and drilling targets.
  • Safely recover and store core samples, ensuring proper labeling, documentation, and organization according to designated depths and project standards.
  • Perform routine maintenance and minor repairs on drilling equipment to ensure optimal performance, minimizing downtime and mechanical failures.
  • Assist in setting up and mobilizing the drilling rig at the exploration site, ensuring proper placement, safety measures, and compliance with environmental standards.
  • Mobilize in setting up drill sites.
  • Properly manage and dispose of drilling fluids and waste materials in accordance with environmental guidelines and company policies.
  • Prepare daily reports of all drilling activities.
  • Perform and document daily pre-shift inspections.
  • Perform and document maintenance and repairs on company equipment and vehicles.
  • Ensure compliance with all company policies and safety protocols while working on-site.
  • Perform physically demanding work for extended hours in various conditions to complete drilling projects.
  • Follow directives from Project Management team, with the sense of duty to take initiative and always remain productive at work while on the jobsite.
  • Collaborate effectively with team members, maintaining a respectful and supportive attitude.
  • Work in a constant state of alertness and in a safe manner.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

This position may supervise drilling assistants.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:

  • Solid understanding of core drilling methods, equipment, and geological sampling techniques.
  • Knowledge of mineral exploration practices is beneficial.
  • Ability to operate drilling equipment safely and effectively. Strong mechanical aptitude and problem-solving skills to troubleshoot issues during drilling operations.
  • Basic knowledge of materials, terms, and practices in the construction field.
  • Basic knowledge of drilling mud fluid and the nature of core drilling.
  • Ability to extract suitable core samples from depths down to 5,000 feet.
  • Complete knowledge of mechanics related to drill rigs, diesel and gasoline engines, hydraulics, and electrical systems.
  • Ability to handle and carry heavy wrenches, tools, and supplies.
  • Ability to operate levers with both hands.
  • Proficiency with hand and power tools.
  • Skill in organizing resources, establishing priorities, meeting deadlines, and managing time.
  • Ability to work in a team environment, take direction from supervisor(s), pay high attention to detail, follow work rules, and adhere to project schedule.
  • Ability to work productively under pressure.
  • Strong self-motivation and work ethic; ability to work with or without direct supervision.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, regulations, instruction manuals, and specifications.
  • Must be available for the full duration of the seasonal project, which may last several months.
  • Ability to travel to remote places for work-related purposes (up to 100% of the time) and remain on the project site for 14 to 30 days at a time.
  • Ability to communicate with employees working on the drill site.
  • Ability to live and work with co-workers in close quarters and keep good morale.

Who is Brice Civil Constructors looking for?

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • One (1) year of previous experience as a Core Driller, ideally in mineral exploration or related industries required.
  • Ability to pass a drug, background screening and physical.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Technical training in drilling or geology is a plus.
  • Experience working in remote or seasonal environments is preferred.
  • Prior experience in Alaska's rural construction industry is preferred.
  • MSHA Certification dated within the past 5 years preferred, or the ability to obtain upon hire.

Working Environment:

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Brice Civil Constructors has a fast-paced multi-tasking office environment requiring a high degree of efficient and effective performance. At times, work is performed outside of the office at indoor and outdoor job sites. Adaptability regarding schedule and design changes, and occasional overtime for immediate field support or bid processing may be necessary. Operate a core drilling rig 12-14 hours per day, working shifts where you will remain at the project site in remote locations and adverse weather conditions for periods.
