What is a live in companion?

Live-In Companions live and work in a client’s home in order to better see to their care. Clients are usually seniors, people with disabilities or illnesses, or those with conditions which limit general self-care. As a Live-In Companion, you may make and serve meals, run errands, and assist with personal needs such as dressing and bathing. Besides daily chores, Live-In Companions also provide camaraderie; they may play cards, watch TV, or enjoy some other recreational games together. Each client is different and their needs may evolve. However, Live-In Companions can expect to do light housework, cook, and provide companionship.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a live in companion, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Live In Companion, you need experience in personal care, basic household management, and often a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with first aid, mobility aids, and household safety protocols is typically required, and CPR certification is highly valued. Compassion, patience, and strong interpersonal communication are vital soft skills for building trust and rapport with clients. These skills and qualities are crucial for ensuring the client's well-being, comfort, and quality of life in their home environment.

Support from agency coordinators or peer networks can also help live-in companions navigate complex situations and maintain a healthy work-life balance.

Job description

Are you a compassionate and experienced caregiver looking to make a difference in the lives of seniors? Griswold Home Care is seeking dedicated Live-In caregivers to join our team in Baton Rouge. As a Live-In caregiver, you’ll provide essential non-medical assistance to our clients, helping them maintain their independence and quality of life.

Responsibilities:

  • Please note:  This position is for clients who live in the greater Baton Rouge area (not Brookhaven).  The caregiver will be required to commute to the client's home in the Baton Rouge area, but will stay for a week at a time during their "on" weeks.
  • Please also note:  This position is for a Live-In caregiver, where you will live in a client's home for 7 days at a time.
  • Assist clients with Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) and Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADLs), including personal care, meal preparation, light housekeeping, and companionship.
  • Create a safe and supportive environment for clients.
  • Foster meaningful connections with clients by engaging in conversation and companionship.
  • Maintain accurate records of care provided.

Awarded Best in Home Care Employer of Choice: Granted only to the top-ranking home care providers, based on client and employee satisfaction scores gathered by Home Care Pulse

Qualifications:

  • Compassionate Provider: You genuinely care about the well-being of others and are committed to making a positive impact.
  • Professional Experience: You have at least 3 years of verified professional experience working with the elderly.
  • Background Check: A clean criminal background record is required.
  • References: Provide a minimum of 2 recent professional references (not friends or family).
  • Driver’s License or State ID: You must have a valid driver’s license or state-issued ID.

Work Schedule:

  • Shifts will be structured as 7 days on, 7 days off - rotating.  Caregiver needs to be able to stay the full 7 days for weeks that they are working, except in limited situations.
  • Caregivers will typically maintain a schedule of 8 - 12.5 hours of work, 1.5 hours of uninterrupted meal time, and eight (8) hours of non-working, unpaid sleep time every workday.  Hours may vary.
  • Caregivers will have a private room to sleep in and be available to assist client overnight if needed (any worked time would be paid), while receiving adequate sleep time.
  • It is common practice for clients to allow caregivers to have a few hours of personal time per day while remaining in the home and still available to assist a client if needed.

Compensation and Benefits:

  • Compensation: Starts at $185 per day plus meals.
  • Room and board provided (private sleeping, storage space, and meals).
  • Weekly Pay: Enjoy consistent pay on a weekly basis.
  • Holiday Pay: 10 holidays paid at a rate of 1.5 times your regular wage.
  • Continuing Education: We invest in your professional growth.
  • Employee Recognition: Join a team that values and celebrates your contributions.
  • Unpaid vacation available with one-month advance notice.
  • Respite and relief scheduling available with two-week advance notice.
