Bethel Family Clinic (BFC) is seeking an experienced and dynamic Medical Director (Physician or Nurse Practitioner) to lead and oversee the organization's clinical services and operations. The successful candidate will play a critical role in ensuring the delivery of high-quality patient care, fostering a culture of clinical excellence and compliance, and advancing strategic initiatives that strengthen healthcare delivery across the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta.
Overview
Bethel Family Clinic is a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) located in Bethel, serving the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta region of Southwest Alaska.
Bethel is located off the Alaska road system and is accessible only by air travel. The community serves as the primary regional hub for 55 surrounding villages throughout the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta.
Approximately 6,000 to 7,000 residents live in Bethel, with nearly 27,000 individuals residing throughout BFC's broader service area.
This position is based in Bethel, Alaska. Travel to surrounding villages is encouraged as part of annual programming and community engagement efforts.

This role offers the opportunity to practice meaningful rural medicine while helping shape clinical operations, provider culture, quality initiatives, and long-term organizational strategy.
Position Description
The Medical Director is a key leadership position within BFC and serves as a member of the organization's Leadership Team. The Medical Director is responsible for oversight of all clinical medical services provided by Bethel Family Clinic.
The ideal candidate will serve as the organization's clinical leader while balancing direct patient care responsibilities with administrative and operational oversight. The Medical Director will provide comprehensive primary care services to patients across the lifespan, with a focus on preventive care, chronic disease management, diagnosis and treatment of illness and injury, medication management, specialty referrals, and patient education.
Position Qualifications:
Physician (M.D./D.O.):
  • Education: Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree from an accredited institution and successful completion of an accredited residency training program.
  • Experience: Residency program for the physician is noted as experience.
  • Licenses, Certifications: Must be licensed to practice medicine in the State of Alaska as required by the State of Alaska Medical Examiners Board or ability to obtain licensure in the State of Alaska. Must be able to be fully privileged and credentialed to practice medicine by BFC.
  • Specialized Skills: Excellent communication skills - written and verbal, ability to display tact and sensitivity, problem solving skills, great decision-making skills, professionalism, teamwork and leadership skills and have resilience
  • Preferred Qualifications: At least four years of practice experience.

Nurse Practitioner:
  • Education: Master's or Doctoral degree from an accredited Advanced Practice Nursing program.
  • Licenses, Certifications: Current Alaska Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) license, or ability to obtain licensure in the State of Alaska. Must be able to be fully privileged and credentialed to practice medicine by BFC.
  • Specialized Skills: Excellent communication skills - written and verbal, ability to display tact and sensitivity, problem solving skills, great decision-making skills, professionalism, teamwork and leadership skills, and have resilience.
  • Preferred Qualifications: At least four years of practice experience. APNP, CRNA, CNM, NP, FNP.

Responsibilities
  • Provide clinical leadership and oversight for patient care services delivered at Bethel Family Clinic.
  • Provide guidance, supervision, and collaboration with clinical staff, including physicians, PAs, NPs, RNs, LPNs, MAs, and ancillary healthcare personnel.
  • Support quality improvement initiatives, clinical compliance, patient safety activities, and evidence-based care practices.
  • Participate in peer review, provider mentoring, and ongoing clinical performance evaluation activities as assigned.
  • Participate in the development, implementation, and review of clinical policies, procedures, and workflows.
  • Collaborate with administrative leadership to support operational goals, regulatory compliance, credentialing, and clinical performance initiatives.
  • Evaluate, diagnose, and treat patients in accordance with accepted standards of medical practice and organizational policies.
  • Address patient concerns and provide education regarding diagnoses, treatment plans, preventive care, nutrition, hygiene, and overall wellness.
  • Maintain active licensure, DEA registration (if applicable), board certification, continuing medical education requirements, and all other required credentials.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable federal, state, payer, accreditation, and organizational requirements.
