Live In Caption Editor information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Live In Caption Editor, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Live In Caption Editor, you need a strong command of grammar, fast and accurate typing skills, and a keen ear for audio content, usually supported by a background in language or communications. Familiarity with real-time captioning software, speech recognition tools, and occasionally stenography equipment is essential. Exceptional attention to detail, multitasking abilities, and strong communication skills help ensure accuracy and clarity under time pressure. These competencies are crucial for providing accessible, error-free captions that support diverse audiences and comply with legal standards.

What are some common challenges faced by Live In Caption Editors, and how can they be managed effectively?

Live In Caption Editors often work under tight deadlines, requiring them to produce accurate captions in real-time as events unfold. This can be challenging due to the rapid pace, varying accents, or technical jargon. Effective time management, strong listening skills, and mastery of captioning software are essential for success. Collaborating closely with broadcasters, technical teams, and sometimes event organizers helps ensure the captions are both timely and accurate. Regular practice and staying updated with industry tools can help mitigate these challenges.

What is a Live In Caption Editor?

A Live In Caption Editor is a professional responsible for creating and editing real-time captions for live television broadcasts, events, or online streams. They ensure that spoken words, sound effects, and other important audio elements are accurately and quickly transcribed into readable text for viewers. This role often requires fast typing skills, attention to detail, and familiarity with captioning software. Live In Caption Editors play a crucial part in making content accessible to individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing.

What is the difference between Live In Caption Editor vs Closed Captioner?

AspectLive In Caption EditorClosed Captioner
CredentialsTypically requires transcription or captioning certifications, strong language skillsOften requires similar transcription skills, sometimes certifications preferred
Work EnvironmentWorks on-site or remotely, often in media or entertainment settingsPrimarily remote, providing captions for TV, online videos, or live broadcasts
Industry UsageUsed in live events, TV productions, and media companiesCommon in broadcasting, streaming services, and online content platforms

While both roles involve creating captions, a Live In Caption Editor focuses on editing and managing live or pre-recorded content in media environments, often requiring on-site presence. A Closed Captioner typically provides captions for recorded content, mainly working remotely. Understanding these differences helps in choosing the right career path or job search focus.

Job description

At Viral Nation, we specialize in building social-first ecosystems for brands to connect with the modern consumer journey. Our integrated solutions align strategy, talent, media, and technology with culturally relevant creativity to scale the world's fastest-growing digital brands. Viral Nation offers a fluid, creative, and growth-oriented environment that will support your ambitions to apply your talents in an open, collaborative, and fast-paced culture. Our ability to stay at the forefront of the industry has fuelled our success and will guide us in paving the path forward. We're driven to push boundaries and think beyond today to deliver strategies, and we're just getting started.

While we continuously exceed our goals, we need your help โ€“ our success is only as great as our people. Strong performance leads to high expectations, and we must keep raising the bar!

Viral Nation is seeking a precise, platform-fluent Video Optimization Editor to join our Studio team. This is not a conceptual or campaign-origination role โ€” it's an execution-focused position built around one core task: taking existing influencer and creator content and optimizing it to be acutely aligned with platform readiness and brand-specified criteria.

Working exclusively for a marquee CPG brand, you'll work within a defined set of digital content standards bespoke to their brand, reformatting and optimizing raw and existing creator assets so they meet the technical and structural requirements of major social platforms (Meta, TikTok, YouTube Shorts)โ€” before they go live. Speed, accuracy, and a trained eye for what's brand and platform compliant are the skills this role demands.

You are the kind of editor who reads platform update documentation. You notice when a super is 3 pixels outside a safe zone. You don't find structured checklist work limiting โ€” you find it clarifying. You're fast, consistent, and don't need ambiguity to do your best work.

What You'll Do Here:

  • Receive raw influencer and creator video content, as well as existing cuts and reformat it to meet a designated set of brand criteria as well as platform-specific technical requirements across Meta, TikTok, YouTube,
  • Recut and crop assets to varying aspect ratios (9:16, 4:5, 1:1) - by scratch when working with raw footage, and via tactics like letterboxing or pillarboxing with existing cuts.
  • Ensure brand logos and visual identifiers appear within the first 1โ€“2 seconds of every video asset.
  • Add, retime, or replace text supers and captions so content is fully legible without audio - optimized for sound-off environments.
  • Verify all text and graphic elements fall within platform-safe and brand-designated content zones, avoiding UI overlap areas on every placement.
  • Trim video length to match platform-optimal durations per placement type (e.g., feed vs. stories vs. in-stream).
  • Audit audio tracks and ensure active sound elements are present and appropriately mixed.
  • Run pre-submission quality checks against a defined checklist before any asset is delivered for posting.
  • Manage simultaneous asset versions across multiple brands, platforms, and markets with consistent output quality.
  • Flag content that cannot be made compliant without reshooting or creator re-submission, and communicate that clearly to project leads.

What You'll Need To Have:

  • 2โ€“5 years of video editing and optimization experience, with a significant portion in social-first or digital advertising contexts.
  • Deep working knowledge of platform specs and UI behaviour across Meta (Feed, Stories, Reels), TikTok, and YouTube Shorts.
  • Proficiency in Adobe Premiere Pro; After Effects a strong plus for motion supers and text animation.
  • Demonstrated ability to work against technical compliance checklists, not just creative direction.
  • Strong understanding of caption and subtitle workflows (SRT, burned-in captions, auto-caption correction).
  • Ability to manage a high volume of assets simultaneously without sacrificing accuracy.
  • Comfort receiving structured feedback and iterating quickly โ€” this role operates in a review-and-revise workflow, not a solo creative one.

Additional Considerations:

  • Experience working within a brand compliance or creative quality framework at an agency or CPG brand.
  • Familiarity with dynamic ad formats or DCO (Dynamic Creative Optimization) asset structures.
  • Basic motion design skills for creating or adjusting lower-thirds and supers natively.
  • Experience working with creator-generated content specifically (as opposed to studio-produced footage).

*Submission of a strong portfolio demonstrating a diverse range of strategy-led social media content, campaigns and/or projects is required with application.*

This role has an annual salary range of $70,000 to $80,000.
This range reflects the full scope and progression of the role, from building capability to operating with sustained impact at a higher level. In addition to base salary, we offer a comprehensive benefits and total rewards package designed to support our team as they grow with us.

Where an offer falls within this range is determined through the interview process. Candidates are benchmarked by the hiring team based on role scope, relevant experience, skill alignment, and expected impact, using consistent and objective criteria.
Compensation Philosophy:

At Viral Nation, compensation is structured, performance-led, and market-aligned. Pay decisions are intentional, based on role requirements, performance, and market alignment by country, and are set to maintain internal pay equity across comparable roles and levels.

Compensation progression is tied to demonstrated performance, expanded scope, and sustained contribution over time, not tenure alone. Employee compensation is reviewed regularly through formal performance reviews and check-ins to ensure alignment with role expectations and impact.
AI in Recruitment:
Viral Nation does not use AI-enabled tools to screen, assess, rank, or select candidates โ€“ our hiring teams make all hiring decisions. AI note-taking tools may be used during interviews.

DEI Commitment:

Viral Nation is committed to diversity, equity and inclusion in our agency. Viral Nation welcomes applications from people with visible and non-visible disabilities. Accommodations are available on request for candidates taking part in all aspects of the recruiting and selection process.
