What is a live in babysitter?

A live-in babysitter is a childcare provider who resides in the family’s home and is responsible for looking after the children, often on a full-time or extended basis. Their duties typically include supervising children, preparing meals, helping with homework, and sometimes performing light household chores related to the children. Having a live-in babysitter can provide families with greater flexibility and consistency in childcare, especially for parents with unpredictable schedules or frequent travel. Compensation usually includes room and board in addition to a salary. This arrangement can benefit both families seeking reliable care and babysitters looking for stable employment and accommodation.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a live in babysitter, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Live In Babysitter, you need experience in child care, basic first aid and CPR certification, and a reliable understanding of child development. Familiarity with household management tasks, scheduling apps, and communication tools is often beneficial. Patience, trustworthiness, and strong interpersonal skills help build positive relationships with both children and parents. These skills ensure a safe, nurturing environment and smooth daily routines for the families you support.

What are some common challenges faced by live in babysitters, and how can they be managed?

Live-in babysitters often face challenges related to maintaining work-life boundaries, adapting to the family's routines, and managing expectations around availability. It's important to communicate clearly with the family about designated work hours and personal time to prevent burnout. Building a respectful relationship and setting mutual expectations can help both the babysitter and the family navigate daily routines smoothly. Additionally, being flexible and adaptable is key, as needs may shift unexpectedly, especially with young children.

Job description

Location:

Greenwich, CT Schedule: Monday – Thursday, 8:00 am – 7:00 pm Children's ages: 1 and 3 years old Start Date: ideally September/October 2026 About the Family An active, family-oriented household in Greenwich, Connecticut, is seeking an experienced, proactive career nanny for a live-in or live-out role. They value structure, kindness, respect, and open communication, and are seeking someone who can work as a trusted, long-term partner within the household while helping to maintain balance in their dynamic day-to-day routines.

Position Overview

If the position is live-in, the overnights will be on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday nights. Regular responsibilities will include the children's dinner, bath time, and bedtime. On evenings when the parents are unavailable, the nanny will remain responsible for the children and will be available to assist as needed. When the parents are home and available, they will generally take responsibility for monitoring the children overnight.

The nanny should, however, be comfortable providing occasional overnight care if specifically requested or if an unexpected need arises. If the position is live-out, the regular schedule will be Monday–Thursday, 8:00 a.m.–7:00 p.m. The role includes occasional travel throughout the year – primarily domestic, including trips to Florida and Colorado. The family also spends August in the Hamptons, and the nanny must be available to work there during that period. Private accommodations will be provided.

The nanny's primary focus will be on childcare, including managing daily routines such as feedings, naps, bath time, and bedtime, as well as planning and facilitating age-appropriate activities that support their development. During downtime (e.g., while the children nap or are with a parent), light child-related household support is expected. Tasks may include tidying child spaces, organizing children's clothing and supplies, running errands for the children, and generally helping keep the household running smoothly.

The nanny should be comfortable working alongside hands‐on parents and other household staff. Clear communication, discretion, flexibility, and a collaborative, team‐oriented attitude are essential.

Compensation & Benefits Annual Salary: approximately $130,000, depending on a live-in or live-out schedule, experience, and qualifications. An hourly breakdown, including overtime, will be provided.
