Job description

5 Axis Setup & Tooling Operator
The 5-Axis Setup & Tooling Operator to support multiple CNC machining cells equipped primarily with Haas UMC-750 5-axis machining centers. This position serves as the technical leader on the production floor for assigned machining cells, ensuring machines remain productive, tooling remains optimized, and production operators have the support needed to meet quality and throughput goals.
The ideal candidate is an experienced CNC machinist who excels at machine setups, tooling management, troubleshooting, and process optimization. While Parts Loader Operators will be responsible for loading/unloading production parts and maintaining machine operation, the 5-Axis Setup & Tooling Operator will be responsible for the more advanced machining functions required to keep production running efficiently.
This role is critical to minimizing downtime, maintaining quality standards, and maximizing spindle utilization across multiple 5-axis machine centers.
Duties & Responsibilities:
CNC Setup & Production Support
  • Perform complete setups on Haas UMC-750 and other 5-axis CNC machining centers.
  • Install and qualify fixtures, work holding, cutting tools, probes, and associated tooling.
  • Load and verify programs, setup sheets, tool offsets, and work offsets.
  • Perform first-piece inspections and production approvals.
  • Support multiple machining cells and prioritize work to maximize machine uptime.
  • Maintain and operate 5 axis machines and deburr parts as required.

Tooling Management
  • Monitor tooling life and proactively replace worn or damaged tools.
  • Adjust and maintain tool length and diameter offsets.
  • Troubleshoot tool breakage, excessive wear, poor surface finish, and dimensional issues.
  • Coordinate tooling inventory requirements with production and purchasing teams.
  • Recommend improvements to tooling strategies and cutting parameters.

Troubleshooting & Process Improvement
  • Respond to machine stoppages and production issues.
  • Diagnose and resolve machining, tooling, fixture, and process-related problems.
  • Optimize cycle times while maintaining product quality and process stability.
  • Assist in validating new fixtures, tooling, and production processes.
  • Work with Manufacturing Engineering to improve CNC processes and overall equipment effectiveness.

Support Production Operators
  • Provide technical guidance and training to Parts Loader Operators.
  • Ensure operators understand work instructions, inspection requirements, and basic machine functions.
  • Support operators in maintaining continuous machine operation.
  • Act as the primary escalation point for machining-related issues on assigned cells.

Quality & Safety
  • Ensure all parts meet blueprint specifications, GD&T requirements, and customer quality standards.
  • Utilize precision measuring equipment including calipers, micrometers, bore gauges, height gauges, and other inspection tools.
  • Maintain compliance with all safety procedures and manufacturing standards.
  • Participate in continuous improvement and lean manufacturing initiatives.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Required Skills & Abilities:
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • 3+ years of CNC machining experience.
  • 2+ years of setup experience on CNC machining centers.
  • Experience with 5-axis machining processes.
  • Strong understanding of tooling, cutting parameters, workholding, and setup practices.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, and GD&T.
  • Experience using precision measuring instruments.
  • Strong mechanical troubleshooting skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with Haas UMC-750 5-axis machining centers.
  • Advanced knowledge of 5-axis machining strategies and setup techniques.
  • Experience with probing systems and tool management systems.
  • Familiarity with CAM-generated programs and CNC program verification.
  • Understanding of lean manufacturing principles.
  • Forklift and overhead crane experience (if applicable).

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Strong understanding of CNC machining fundamentals.
  • Ability to independently perform complex setups.
  • Excellent troubleshooting and problem-solving capabilities.
  • Working knowledge of feeds, speeds, tool geometry, and machining strategies.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality.
  • Effective communication and leadership skills.
  • Ability to mentor and support less experienced operators.
  • Self-motivated with a strong sense of ownership and accountability.

Physical Requirements
  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
