CNC Machinist
5-Axis Machining | Mastercam | Aerospace Manufacturing
Plymouth, MI
Up to $32.00/Hourly (Based on Experience)
1st Shift Opportunity
We are seeking a Senior CNC Machinist - 5-Axis Machining to support precision aerospace manufacturing by programming, setting up, and operating CNC vertical and horizontal 5-axis machining centers. This role requires expertise with Mastercam, CNC programming, GD&T, Heidenhain and Fidia controls, precision inspection, and machining complex metallic components while maintaining AS9100 quality standards and safe manufacturing practices.
Responsibilities:
  • Program, set up, and operate CNC vertical and horizontal 5-axis machining centers to machine castings, forgings, weldments, plates, blocks, tubing, and other metallic components.
  • Interpret work orders, blueprints, engineering drawings, machining specifications, orthographic drawings, and GD&T requirements to plan machining operations.
  • Develop and modify CNC programs using Mastercam.
  • Perform complete machine setups, including tooling selection, offsets, compensation, work coordinate systems, and program prove-outs.
  • Establish workpiece alignment using 3-point indicating methods, stock models, tooling balls, and precision measurement techniques.
  • Set up and machine large workpieces on horizontal machining centers.
  • Verify machine setups by checking machine travel, head clearance, first-article parts, and dimensional accuracy.
  • Monitor machining operations, inspect finished components, troubleshoot machining issues, perform root cause analysis, and adjust machine controls as required.
  • Replace worn tooling and maintain dimensional accuracy while following quality assurance procedures.
  • Perform preventive maintenance and support Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) initiatives.
  • Document production activities, quality inspections, and non-conformances within the Plex ERP system.
  • Collaborate with Engineering, Programming, Materials, and Quality teams to support manufacturing objectives.
  • Maintain compliance with company safety procedures, quality standards, and environmental policies.
  • Participate in continuous learning and process improvement initiatives.

Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or GED, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum 5 years of CNC machining experience operating multiple 5-axis machining centers in a manufacturing environment.
  • Minimum 2 years of Mastercam programming experience.
  • Experience machining complex metallic components using 5-axis CNC equipment, including Zimmermann, Apec, FPT, Mecof, or similar machining centers.
  • Ability to interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, specifications, and Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T).
  • Experience performing complete machine setups, tooling selection, offsets, compensation, and first-article verification.
  • Knowledge of precision measuring equipment, machining parameters, and quality inspection processes.
  • General knowledge of ISO 9001, AS9100, quality management systems, and manufacturing best practices.
  • General knowledge of 5S workplace organization and basic fixturing methods.
  • Experience using Plex ERP or similar manufacturing ERP systems to document production activities.
  • Strong mathematical skills, including geometry, trigonometry, ratios, percentages, and precision calculations used in machining operations.
  • Ability to troubleshoot machining processes and perform root cause analysis.
  • Ability to meet company background screening, employment verification, reference check, and controlled substance testing requirements.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with Soraluce machining centers.
  • Experience operating Heidenhain and Fidia CNC controls.
  • Crane operation experience.
  • Knowledge of AS9100 and ISO 14001 standards.
  • Experience supporting aerospace, defense, or high-precision manufacturing environments.
