Literacy Specialist - New York State
Position Summary
The Literacy Specialist provides targeted instruction and support to students struggling with literacy skills, including reading, writing, and comprehension. The specialist collaborates with classroom teachers to implement evidence-based literacy programs, assesses student progress, and develops interventions to ensure all students meet grade-level literacy standards.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provide small group and individual instruction to students identified as needing literacy support.
  • Conduct literacy assessments to identify student needs and monitor progress.
  • Collaborate with classroom teachers to integrate literacy strategies into general education instruction.
  • Develop and implement evidence-based literacy interventions aligned with NYS Learning Standards.
  • Maintain detailed records of student progress, including reports for parents, teachers, and administrators.
  • Support classroom teachers with professional development in literacy instruction and differentiated strategies.
  • Participate in staff meetings, parent conferences, and school-based literacy initiatives.
  • Promote a positive, engaging, and inclusive learning environment.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Education, Literacy, or a related field.
  • NYS teaching certification preferred (Literacy, Reading, or related content area).
  • Knowledge of evidence-based literacy programs and interventions.
  • Strong assessment, instructional, and classroom management skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with teachers, students, and families.
Compensation
  • Bachelor's Degree (Non-Certified Teacher): Starting salary $48,500
  • Bachelor's Degree (Certified Teacher): Starting salary $50,500

Salary may increase based on experience, additional certifications, and advanced degrees.
Preferred Qualifications
  • NYS Literacy Specialist or Reading Specialist Certification.
  • Experience providing literacy interventions to diverse student populations.
  • Knowledge of assessment tools, RTI (Response to Intervention), and differentiated instruction.
  • Strong data analysis and reporting skills.
