Job description

Summit Technologies Inc. is seeking a Lead Cybersecurity Engineer with Embedded Systems Engineering experience to develop and transition cybersecurity technologies from early-stage laboratory demonstrations to fieldable prototypes for unmanned underwater vehicles (UUVs) and other areas within our client’s business units. You will work with an interdisciplinary research and development team comprised of engineering, scientific, power generation, power storage, and software experts to develop, implement, and test cybersecurity solutions for embedded systems utilized in UUVs and other critical platforms. Leverage your cybersecurity experience and expertise in robotics, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), autonomous vehicles, space systems, missile systems, submarines, robotic warfare, and/or naval technologies to protect assets that support national security missions, ocean exploration and subsea infrastructure from being comprised by threat actors and adversaries. Certain innovations may also be deployed within different functional domains of the client’s established commercial power generation, power storage, and power distribution systems. This is a full-time, on-site role located in Niskayuna, NY. Only U.S. citizens will be considered, as this position requires an active U.S. DoD Secret clearance. Roles & Responsibilities: Collaborate with the client’s business units to develop and transition cybersecurity technologies for embedded systems from early-stage lab demonstrations to fieldable prototypes.
Work with hardware suppliers and engineering tool providers to identify the best solutions for the most challenging industrial and defense applications.
Collaborate with universities, industrial consortiums, commercial partners, and others to advance the state of the art in Operational Technology (OT) cybersecurity for embedded systems.
Lead and manage small- to medium-sized R&D projects or tasks.
Publish technical papers, file patents, and contribute to open-source communities.
Assist with the development of new business opportunities by contributing to or leading external proposals.
Education & Experience Requirements: Master’s degree in computer science, Electrical Engineering, or related disciplines with a minimum of three years of industry experience [a bachelor’s degree in computer science, Electrical Engineering, or related disciplines with a minimum of five years of industry experience may be substituted as an equivalent].
A minimum of two years of experience in software development for embedded systems such as computer architecture, Linux OS, network protocols.
A minimum of two years of experience in embedded programming skills such as: C/C++, Python, Bash/Shell.
A minimum of two years (up to five years) of experience with Linux security and Linux driver development.
Experience with Industrial protocols such as Modbus/TCP, Modbus RTU, DNP3, Ethernet/IP, PROFINET, OPC UA/DA, BACnet, IEC 60870-5-104, IEC 61850, MQTT, CAN/CANopen is desired.
Experience with ICS/SCADA architectures such as PLCs/RTUs/HMIs, Historians, Fieldbus, edge gateways, DMZ patterns is preferred.
Experience with OT network design such as Purdue Model, segmentation, VLANs, firewalls, zero-trust in OT is a plus.
Experience with OT security standards and practices such as IEC 62443, NERC CIP, NIST 800-82, SBOM, secure firmware updates is preferred.
Experience with Monitoring and remote access such as Passive asset discovery, protocol-aware IDS, secure vendor access, MFA in OT environment is desired.
Experience with Deterministic networking and timing concepts such as QoS, PTP, TSN considerations in safety-critical systems is preferred.
Experience with device hardening including pen testing is desired
Experience with hardware-based security (e.g., HSM, TPM, ARM TrustZone, Secure Boot) is a plus.
Working knowledge of cryptographic algorithms, protocols, or standards (e.g., TLS, X.509) is preferred.
Experience with embedded development in an RTOS environment (e.g., QNX, VxWorks).
Experience with embedded Linux (e.g., Yocto) and firmware development.
Security Clearance: Active/current U.S. DoD secret clearance (interim secret may be considered to start).
