Job Description Summary

The Senior Director of Technology is responsible for planning and managing the information technology (IT) needs for the College of Engineering and Computing (CEC).

Job Description

Essential Duties of the Position

  • Management, planning and supervision of support personnel for CEC's information technology needs.

  • Identify emerging technologies and assess their potential for use by faculty and students in the areas of teaching and research.

  • Work closely with faculty to identify tools, hardware and software to support their research areas.

  • Support and advance CEC's use of social media, distance learning and emerging communication technologies.

  • Advocate for and facilitate technology adoption among faculty and academic programs.

  • Responsible for information security within CEC and for Crowdstrike alerts.

  • Oversee the planning, acquisition, and support of computing and networking resources for faculty and staff, student laboratories, and classrooms to provide a robust and secure infrastructure for computing within the division on the Oxford campus.

  • Supervise and assist support staff. NOTE: This has grown from 1.5 staff members and 4 students when first hired into position to 2.25 staff members and 8 students.

  • Install, manage and maintain the following systems: Classroom AV systems, software risk review requests for CEC, Proxmox virtualization platform, Openstack virtualization platform, Fourwinds Digital Signage, Rubrik backups and others

  • Provide support for all linux servers including using ansible and puppet.

  • Manage CECIT AWS instances and permissions.

  • Manage CECIT Firewall and DNS accounts.

  • Manage Cybersecurity Lab and virtualization platform.

  • Act as backup for all CEC IT needs.

  • Work with staff to manage multiple account profiles such as entity and courtesy accounts.

  • Help maintain CEC networking using Cisco switches including configuring IP addresses, DHCP, DNS, Wireguard and Vlans.

  • Manage the CEC IT budget, including allocation of student tech fee funds from Central IT to CEC.

  • Maintain computer and software lifecycle for CEC including ordering and tracking both hardware and software.

  • Oversee benchmarking of services provided.

  • Work with an advisory council of users to plan, establish policies, and continually improve services.

  • Assist CEC departmental technical support staff to facilitate their support for departmental-specific computing.

  • Represent CEC on the university-wide forums, including Miami University IT Services, other divisions, and regional campuses in order to coordinate computing, network and software support across the university. Participate in the selection and implementation of software affecting academic divisions as well as steering teams related to the software.

  • Participate on the committee for Miami's High Performance Computing Initiative future plans.

  • Coordinate the Academic Directors of Technology monthly meeting, which includes representatives for all divisions.

  • Other duties as assigned by the Dean of the College of Engineering and Computing.

Minimum Qualifications:

Required: Bachelors of Science in IT related field and 7 years of experienceOR 15 years of IT support experience in an academic setting.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Basic windows desktop and server knowledge
  • Basic Mac OS knowledge
  • Strong Linux Skills
  • Strong networking skills relating to IP Addressing, DNS, DHCP, PXE, IPTables, VLAN and Cisco Switch Management
  • Experience with virtualization

Preferred Qualificatns:

  • Master's of Science in IT related Field
