What are the roles and responsibilities of a Linux System Engineer QA?

A Linux System Engineer QA (Quality Assurance) is responsible for ensuring the reliability, stability, and performance of Linux-based systems through rigorous testing and validation processes. Their duties typically include developing test plans, automating test scripts, troubleshooting issues, and collaborating with development and operations teams to resolve defects. They also help ensure that systems meet organizational requirements and industry standards for quality and security. This role often involves maintaining documentation and supporting continuous integration and deployment pipelines.

How does a Linux System Engineer QA typically collaborate with development and operations teams to ensure software quality?

Linux System Engineer QAs play a vital role in bridging development and operations teams by designing and executing automated test suites on Linux environments. They often work closely with developers to understand new features and potential system vulnerabilities, while also coordinating with operations to ensure smooth deployment and system stability. Regular communication and collaboration are essential, as the QA Engineer provides feedback from tests, helps troubleshoot issues, and contributes to continuous integration pipelines. This collaborative approach not only ensures high-quality releases but also fosters a culture of shared responsibility for software reliability.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Linux System Engineer QA, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Linux System Engineer QA, you need strong expertise in Linux system administration, scripting (such as Bash or Python), and a solid understanding of QA methodologies, usually backed by a degree in computer science or related certifications like RHCE. Familiarity with automation tools (e.g., Ansible, Jenkins), containerization (Docker, Kubernetes), and testing frameworks is essential. Analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for diagnosing issues and collaborating with development teams. These competencies ensure reliable system performance, efficient troubleshooting, and delivery of high-quality software in demanding environments.

Job Description:

GDIT is your place. You make it your own by embracing autonomy, seizing opportunity, and being trusted to deliver your best every day. We think. We act. We deliver. There is no challenge we can't turn into opportunity. Our work depends on TS/SCI level cleared Linux Systems Engineer joining our team to support our Intelligence customer in Springfield, VA or St. Louis, MO.

This position supports the Geospatial Services & Solutions business area to provide high-quality, cost-effective solutions to the customer. As part of the GSS Team the linux systems engineer expertise is needed to support a sophisticated enterprise environment.

The Linux Systems Engineer is an active participant in SAFe and Scrum development teams and meetings. The systems engineer will be responsible for supporting the customer's enterprise environment.

SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Design, implement, and maintain enterprise Linux-based infrastructure in both on-premises and virtualized environments.
  • Administer, maintain, and optimize Nutanix hyperconverged infrastructure (HCI), including AHV, Prism Central, and Prism Element, to support enterprise Linux workloads.
  • Collaborate with infrastructure teams to provision, configure, and manage virtual machines, storage, networking, and cluster resources within Nutanix environments.
  • Develop and maintain automation solutions using Ansible and scripting languages (e.g., Bash, Python).
  • Standardize system configuration, patching, and deployment processes through Infrastructure-as-Code practices.
  • Administer and support Red Hat ecosystem tools, including Satellite and Capsule.
  • Integrate and manage authentication and authorization mechanisms (e.g., OAuth, SSO, identity providers).
  • Support the development of dashboards and observability solutions using tools such as Grafana and Zabbix.
  • Monitor, troubleshoot, and optimize Linux systems and Nutanix infrastructure for performance, availability, and capacity.
  • Troubleshoot complex system, virtualization, storage, networking, and integration issues across distributed environments.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to improve system reliability, scalability, security, and operational efficiency.
  • Document system architecture, processes, automation workflows, and infrastructure standards.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives, including automation maturity, platform modernization, and operational best practices.

EDUCATION

Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical discipline, or the equivalent combination of education, technical training, or work/military experience.

QUALIFICATIONS

5+ years of experience administering and engineering Linux systems in enterprise environments, including experience supporting enterprise virtualization platforms such as Nutanix.

Required Skills

  • Solid understanding of Linux system administration fundamentals (networking, storage, security, and OS internals).
  • Strong expertise in configuration management and automation using Ansible.
  • Proficiency in scripting (Bash, Python, or similar) for automation and tooling.
  • Experience managing Red Hat-based environments (RHEL, Satellite, Capsule, or similar tools).
  • Hands-on experience administering Nutanix HCI environments, including AHV, Prism Central, Prism Element, virtual machine lifecycle management, storage, networking, and cluster operations.
  • Experience deploying, managing, and troubleshooting Linux virtual machines in Nutanix environments.
  • Understanding of virtualization, hypervisor technologies, storage, and networking concepts.
  • Experience troubleshooting complex infrastructure, virtualization, and performance issues.
  • Experience implementing security best practices in Linux environments.
  • Experience with monitoring and alerting systems.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work independently.
  • Active TS/SCI clearance required and eligibility to obtain a CI Polygraph.

Desired Skills

  • Experience with Nutanix advanced capabilities such as Files, Objects, Flow, Calm, or Disaster Recovery.
  • Experience with Nutanix automation using APIs, PowerShell, or Infrastructure-as-Code tools.
  • Experience with load balancing devices such as HAProxy or F5.
  • Familiarity with authentication and authorization concepts (e.g., OAuth, LDAP, SSO).
  • Experience with observability and dashboarding tools such as Grafana and Zabbix.
  • Familiarity with containerization technologies (Docker, Kubernetes).
  • Knowledge of CI/CD pipelines and integration with infrastructure automation.
  • Experience with VMware-to-Nutanix migration or hybrid virtualization environments.
  • Strong communication and documentation skills.

Summary of Changes

This version positions Nutanix as a primary platform, rather than simply listing it as another virtualization technology. Candidates with genuine Nutanix administration experience (AHV, Prism, cluster operations, VM lifecycle, storage, networking, and troubleshooting) will recognize the role as a good fit, while Linux engineers without Nutanix experience will understand it is a significant requirement rather than a nice-to-have.
