Project Overview:

System Administrator with Linux Infrastructure experience to join our team to support the activities in Bethesda, MD. As a Linux Systems Engineer you will be responsible for supporting Linux environments in both the virtual and physical platform. You will be part of a team supporting several applications, databases, mail servers, filer servers that support NIH missions.

In this role the employee will provide IT operational and maintenance support including, but not limited to, system/server and network infrastructure planning, design and configuration, testing and monitoring network resources hardware and software server and special-use workstation installation, performance tuning and maintenance, end-user support and problem resolution, technical system integration, and provide system capacity analysis and planning.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Perform installation, configuration, upgrades, optimization, maintenance, and troubleshooting for physical and virtual Unix/Linux servers supporting applications, databases, monitoring tools, and other enterprise services.
  • Provide technical support for Unix/Linux servers and workstations, including the installation and troubleshooting of scientific applications used for imaging, computational biology, and bioinformatics.
  • Automate server configuration and deployment using tools such as Ansible, Puppet, Packer, Vagrant, and VMware vSphere.
  • Use Git or similar version control systems to maintain scripts, configurations, and technical documentation.
  • Manage Red Hat Linux server and workstation infrastructure using Red Hat Satellite or similar enterprise management tools.
  • Collaborate with information security teams to identify and remediate system vulnerabilities and security issues.
  • Plan and perform system maintenance and upgrades while minimizing downtime and disruption to production services.
  • Configure, maintain, back up, and restore user and server data to support system availability and continuity.
  • Must work 2-days a week on Client site in Bethesda Maryland


Required qualifications:

  • Ability to pass a background check to obtain Public Trust clearance
  • 5 years server administrator experience
  • BS/BA or equivalent and five yearsโ€™ experience as a server administrator
  • 3+ yearsโ€™ experience as a UNIX/Linux administrator, including handling the wide range of hardware and operating system combinations.
  • Experience in automating server configurations and deployments
  • Experience monitoring various types of devices via Splunk, Nagios and custom scripts.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills


Preferred qualifications:

  • Experience in installing, configuring, and administrating Windows Enterprise servers and/or Mac application servers and workstations
  • Ability to manage and communicate project tasks, status, and deadlines
  • Prior Healthcare or similar field work experience
  • 1+ years working in a multi-OS setup
