Job description

Overview:

GovCIO is currently seeking a Senior Linux Administrator to support the installation, configuration, maintenance, and optimization of Linux based systems in support of 616th Operations Center (616 OC) operations. This position will be located in San Antonio, TX and will be an onsite position.

Responsibilities:

Manages and maintains Linux-based systems and servers. Primary duties include installing, configuring, updating, and hardening Linux operations systems and software applications. Ensures system security by implementing appropriate measures, such as firewalls and intrusion detection systems, and by regularly applying security patches. The Linux administrator also works closely with the VMWare VCenter administrator and the VMWare Horizon Administrator to support Linux platforms that host critical VMWare applications and services. Additionally, the Linux administrator creates Ansible scripts that automate routine tasks to improve efficiency and reduce manual workload.

  • Installs, configures, updates, and hardens Linux operations systems and software.
  • Collaborates with other system administrators to ensure system security by implementing appropriate measures, such as firewall and intrusion detection systems

Qualifications:

High School with 9+ years (or commensurate experience)

Required Skills and Experience

  • Clearance Required: TS/SCI
  • 9 years of experience in IT support or a related role
  • Interpersonal and professional; oral and written communications skills required.
  • Ability to work independently, manage priorities, and provide excellent customer support
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities in a fast-paced environment
  • DoD 8140 certification Information Assurance Technical (IAT) Level II (CompTIA Security+ or equivalent)
  • Strong experience with enterprise Linux distributions (RHEL preferred)
  • Experience with configuration management tools (Ansible preferred)
  • Solid understanding of networking concepts (DNS, TCP/IP, firewalls)
  • Experience with system monitoring tools
  • Strong knowledge of security best practices and system hardening
  • Strong knowledge of compliance frameworks (STIGs, NIST, etc.) preferably in government environments


Preferred Skills and Experience

  • Deploy, configure, and maintain Red Hat Satellite server infrastructure
  • Perform automate patching of Linux servers (RHEL, CentOS, Rocky) using Satellite and Hammer CLI
  • Build and deploy new RHEL hosts using PXE, DHCP, and TFTP via Satellite
  • Handle Red Hat Subscriptions and Manifests, ensuring compliance across all connected systems
  • Expert-level ability to operate without a GUI, using command-line tools for daily maintenance, troubleshooting, and patching
  • Strong scripting skills, particularly in Bash or Python, to automate recurring tasks, patching, and system updates
  • Ability to manage storage (partitions, logical volumes) and perform system backups/disaster recovery
  • Hardening servers (e.g., STIGs compliance), managing firewalls, and managing user access
  • Monitoring system health (CPU, memory, disk usage) and tuning parameters to improve performance
  • Experience configuring .repo files to manage remote, local, or satellite repositories
  • 4-6 years of experience with Linux operating systems (e.g., Ubuntu, CentOS, Red Hat etc.)
  • 3-7+ years of experience with VMware Horizon View, vCenter, and vSphere, specializing in deploying and managing Linux based virtual desktops
  • Deep knowledge of VMware Horizon 7.x/8.x, vSphere, ESXi, and VDI components
  • Experience in creating, updating, and managing Linux golden images, application layering and user profile management (e.g. UEM)
  • Strong understanding of networking concepts (subnets, VLANs, firewalls) and security protocols, including Active Directory integration
  • 2-5+ years of experience managing production-level Elastic clusters and expertise in optimizing cluster performance, sharding, and security. Candidates must know how to deploy, configure, and troubleshoot Elasticsearch, Kibana, Logstash, and Beats using automation tools like Ansible.
  • Red Hat Certified Engineer (RHCE) certification preferred
  • Red Hat Certified System Administrator (RHCSA) certification preferred
  • VMware Certified Professional (VCP-DTM or VCP-DCV) preferred
