What are Linux Managers?

Linux Managers are IT professionals responsible for overseeing and maintaining Linux-based systems and servers within an organization. They manage a team of system administrators, ensure system reliability and security, plan upgrades, and implement best practices for Linux environments. Their role often includes troubleshooting complex issues, managing user access, and developing strategies for backups and disaster recovery. Linux Managers also coordinate with other IT departments to support business needs and ensure compliance with company policies.

What are some common challenges faced by Linux Managers when leading a team of system administrators?

Linux Managers often encounter challenges such as balancing daily operational tasks with long-term infrastructure improvements, ensuring consistent security updates across multiple servers, and managing team workloads efficiently. They must also facilitate clear communication between team members and other departments, especially when troubleshooting complex issues or implementing new technologies. Strong leadership, effective delegation, and staying current with evolving Linux distributions and best practices are key to overcoming these challenges and supporting both the team and organizational goals.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Linux Manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Linux Manager, you need deep expertise in Linux system administration, network management, and scripting, often supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with configuration management tools (like Ansible or Puppet), virtualization platforms, and certifications such as RHCE are highly valuable. Leadership, problem-solving, and strong communication are essential soft skills for managing teams and coordinating complex projects. These skills ensure the secure, efficient, and reliable operation of IT infrastructure while fostering effective collaboration within technical teams.

The position combines deep technical leadership with strategic execution, requiring close collaboration with product management to define and deliver a clear engineering roadmap. You will also represent the organization in external automotive and industrial ecosystems, including customers, partners, and standards bodies. This is a highly influential role where you will help shape engineering practices, drive delivery quality, and ensure alignment with global safety-critical standards. It is ideal for a leader passionate about open source, scalable systems, and building high-performing engineering teams in a global, remote-first environment.

Accountabilities:
  • Define and execute the engineering strategy and roadmap for automotive and industrial software initiatives in alignment with product leadership and business goals.
  • Lead, grow, and mentor a globally distributed team of engineers, ensuring high-quality delivery and strong technical direction.
  • Drive adoption of Linux-based and open-source solutions tailored for automotive and industrial use cases, ensuring compliance with safety and security standards.
  • Collaborate with product management and cross-functional stakeholders to translate vision into actionable engineering plans and execution.
  • Represent the organization in automotive and industrial communities, including standards consortia, partners, and customers.
  • Promote modern agile development practices, engineering excellence, and continuous improvement across teams and processes.
  • Establish strong engineering culture, ensuring alignment with organizational values while enabling scalability and collaboration.
Requirements:
  • Strong background in software engineering with deep expertise in Linux systems, embedded development, and open-source technologies.
  • Proven experience in automotive or industrial domains, including familiarity with standards such as ISO 26262, ISO 21434, IEC 61508, SOTIF, or ASPICE.
  • Hands-on experience with C/C++ and Python development in embedded or systems environments.
  • Demonstrated experience leading, mentoring, and managing engineering teams in a distributed or global setup.
  • Strong understanding of functional safety, cybersecurity, and compliance requirements in regulated environments.
  • Experience working in agile development environments with a track record of delivering high-quality software on time.
  • Strong communication and leadership skills, with the ability to influence technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Benefits:
  • Fully remote-first work environment with global flexibility.
  • Annual learning and development budget (USD $2,000) to support professional growth.
  • Annual compensation review and performance-based recognition rewards.
  • Paid annual leave and comprehensive parental leave policies.
  • Employee Assistance Programme supporting wellbeing and work-life balance.
  • Opportunities for international travel to team events and engineering "sprints."
  • Travel benefits including priority pass access for eligible global events.
  • Inclusive, global culture focused on open source innovation and engineering excellence.
