What is a Linux Kernel job?

A Linux Kernel job involves working on the development, maintenance, and optimization of the Linux kernel, which is the core component of the Linux operating system. Professionals in this role may focus on areas such as device drivers, memory management, file systems, or security. They typically work with programming languages like C and tools such as Git for version control. These roles are common in industries like embedded systems, cloud computing, and operating system development. Strong knowledge of Linux internals and debugging skills are essential for success in this field.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Linux Kernel position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Linux Kernel Developer, you need strong proficiency in C programming, expertise with operating system concepts, and a solid understanding of hardware integration, often backed by a degree in Computer Science or a related field. Familiarity with git version control, debugging tools like gdb, and experience contributing to open-source projects or relevant Linux Foundation certifications are common requirements. Excellent problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and the ability to collaborate within globally distributed teams set top performers apart. These capabilities are essential for navigating the complexities of kernel-level development, ensuring high-quality contributions, and driving innovation in the Linux ecosystem.

What are some common challenges faced by Linux Kernel Developers, and how can they be addressed?

Linux Kernel Developers often encounter complex issues such as debugging low-level code, maintaining backward compatibility, and efficiently diagnosing hardware-software interactions. Navigating the vast and collaborative open-source community also requires effective communication and adherence to coding standards. These challenges can be addressed by actively participating in kernel mailing lists, leveraging advanced debugging tools, and continuously updating your knowledge through community resources. Being proactive in code reviews and engaging with other developers can also streamline problem-solving and ensure high-quality code contributions. Embracing collaborative best practices helps create robust and maintainable kernel modules.

With a net revenue of USD 1.73 billion in FY 2024, and a presence in over 30 countries across five continents, Landis+Gyr empowers utilities and consumers to optimize energy usage through advanced metering, grid-edge intelligence, and powerful data analytics.

Today, our global team of about 6,300 professionals is shaping the digital energy era-developing innovative technologies that support decarbonization, grid modernization, and real-time energy insights. Our record USD 4.6 billion order backlog and strong book-to-bill ratio reflect long-term confidence in our mission and solutions.

Join us at Landis+Gyr, where we manage energy better!

We are looking for a Staff Engineer to join our Firmware QA team and take ownership of both manual and automated testing across diverse product lines including Collector, Elec. EP, Battery EP, and EIC. You will validate firmware across embedded Linux platforms, test wireless communication stacks and networking protocols, and drive automation efforts to integrate test coverage into our nightly regression pipeline. This is a senior individual contributor role requiring deep technical expertise, strong ownership, and the ability to operate with minimal guidance.

Key Responsibilities:

Design, execute, and document manual test cases for firmware features spanning embedded Linux user and kernel space.
Validate wireless communication subsystems including RF, WiFi, and Bluetooth across device configurations.
Test and verify networking protocol behavior including IPv4, IPv6, ICMP, DHCPv6, TCP/IP, UDP, PPP, and Ethernet.
Evaluate Layer-2 switching and Layer-3 routing functionality to ensure correctness and stability.
Automate manual firmware test cases using Python, Bash, or Robot Framework and integrate them into the nightly regression build and CI/CD pipeline.
Build and configure hardware/software test setups from scratch, manually verify them, and then automate for continuous regression coverage.
Maintain and improve the automation framework, ensuring scalability and reliability across all product lines.
Identify, document, and track defects with clear reproduction steps and thorough root-cause analysis.
Monitor nightly build results, triage failures, and report findings with actionable detail.
Collaborate with firmware engineers to review requirements, provide early testing feedback, and mentor junior QA engineers.

Company Values:

Supports and adheres to Company's core values.
Performs other duties or responsibilities as assigned or required.
Supports and adheres to Company's Code of Conduct and Ethics Policy.
Represents Company in a positive, professional manner when working with both internal and external customers.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Hands-on experience testing embedded Linux systems in both user space and kernel space.
Proven testing experience with wireless protocols -- RF, WiFi, or Bluetooth.
Strong knowledge of networking protocols: IPv4, IPv6, ICMP, DHCPv6, TCP/IP, UDP, Ethernet, and PPP.
Familiarity with Layer-2 (switching) and Layer-3 (routing) protocol testing.
Strong scripting skills in Python and/or Bash for test automation.
Experience with Robot Framework for structured test automation.
Experience integrating tests into CI/CD pipelines or nightly regression systems.
Ability to work independently, manage multiple priorities, and deliver with minimal guidance.
Strong communication skills and a collaborative, ownership-driven attitude.
Proficiency in C or C++ for understanding and debugging firmware-level code.
Exposure to network emulation or traffic analysis tools (e.g., Wireshark, iPerf, tcpdump).
Experience with test management tools (e.g., TestRail, Jira, or equivalent).
Experience with version control systems such as Git.
Strong technical ownership and a commitment to quality are a must.

Education and Experience:

B.S. in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related degree required.
Extensive software development experience (7-15 years).
