Linehaul information

What is a linehaul driver?

A linehaul driver is a professional truck driver responsible for transporting goods over long distances, typically between terminals, distribution centers, or major cities. Unlike local delivery drivers, linehaul drivers usually operate heavy trucks on set routes and schedules, often working overnight or for several days at a time. Their main focus is on efficiently and safely moving freight between hubs, rather than making multiple stops for deliveries. This role is essential in the logistics and freight industry as it ensures timely delivery of goods across regions.

What does a typical day look like for a linehaul driver, and how does the role interact with other parts of the logistics team?

A typical day for a Linehaul driver involves transporting freight between terminals or distribution centers, usually over long distances and during set shifts. Drivers often start with pre-trip inspections, coordinate with dispatchers for route and load details, and maintain communication throughout the journey to report progress or issues. Collaboration with dock workers, dispatchers, and other drivers is essential to ensure timely pickups, deliveries, and efficient transfers of cargo. While much of the driving is independent, teamwork is crucial at terminals and for meeting schedules, making strong communication and time management skills important for success.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a linehaul driver, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Linehaul Driver, you need a valid commercial driver's license (CDL), a clean driving record, and a thorough understanding of DOT regulations. Familiarity with GPS navigation systems, electronic logging devices (ELDs), and freight handling equipment is typically required. Reliability, attention to detail, and strong time management are important soft skills for ensuring timely and safe delivery. These competencies are crucial for maintaining safety, regulatory compliance, and efficient long-distance transportation of goods.

What is the difference between Linehaul vs Local Driver?
