Position Summary
Reporting to the Lead Lighting Project Manager, the Lighting Systems Technician is responsible for the onsite implementation, commissioning, programming, troubleshooting, service, and support of theatrical and architectural lighting systems. This role executes final system startup, validates system performance, performs hardware and software upgrades, and provides customer training to ensure lighting systems operate safely, reliably, and in accordance with project requirements and manufacturer specifications.
This is a field-based position requiring extensive travel and direct client interaction. The Lighting Systems Technician serves as Heartland's primary technical representative during commissioning, service, and closeout activities and directly influences customer satisfaction, system reliability, and project success.
Success in this role requires strong technical expertise, independent problem-solving ability, excellent customer communication skills, and a commitment to quality, safety, and continuous learning.
Essential Functions
The specific breakdown of time spent on different tasks will vary based on the workload and the priorities of the clients. The following is an estimated breakdown of duties and time spent on each. Â
Project Preparation & Mobilization - 20%
- Review project documentation, drawings, specifications, and programming requirements prior to mobilization.
- Verify bill of materials, equipment, software, and required components are complete and available.
- Coordinate schedules with Project Managers, Operations personnel.
- Identify scope gaps, technical concerns, and readiness issues before deployment.
- Understand project objectives, commissioning requirements, and customer expectations.
- Prepare tools, equipment, documentation, and testing resources required for successful field execution.
System Commissioning & Startup - 40%
- Energize, commission, and validate theatrical and architectural lighting systems.
- Perform low-voltage wiring terminations, verification, and testing.
- Assemble, install, focus, and configure lighting fixtures and associated equipment.
- Program, configure, and test lighting consoles, processors, and control systems.
- Verify proper system operation against project requirements and manufacturer specifications.
- Perform system testing, troubleshooting, and performance validation prior to customer turnover.
- Ensure completed systems are fully operational and ready for client use.
Troubleshooting, Service & Technical Support - 25%
- Diagnose technical issues involving lighting controls, fixtures, networking, software, and system integration.
- Perform repairs, upgrades, firmware updates, and corrective actions as required.
- Communicate troubleshooting progress and recommendations clearly to clients and project stakeholders.
- Respond to service calls and support requests in a professional and timely manner.
- Minimize return mobilizations through effective root-cause analysis and issue resolution.
- Document field modifications, service activities, and system changes accurately.
Customer Training & System Handoff - 10%
- Conduct end-user training on lighting systems, controls, and operational procedures.

Requirements
Position Type and Expected Hours of Work
- Full-time, Hourly (non-exempt or exempt classification per company designation).Â
- Standard hours: Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m.Â
- Frequent travel required (up to 90%), with 2-weeks stays expected.
- Occasional evening, weekend, and extended-hour work based on project demands.
Physical Demands
Please review the Essential Job Functions on the last two pages for a complete listing of physical and mental capabilities required of the position. In general, this position requires extended periods of standing, walking, climbing ladders or operating lifts, and performing overhead work in active jobsite environments. The role involves lifting and carrying tools and materials up to 50 pounds, operating hand and light power tools, and working at heights. Sufficient visual acuity and manual dexterity are required to inspect wiring, program system components, and complete detailed technical tasks. The position also requires the ability to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) while working in construction and performance environments.Â
Minimum Required Education and Experience
- Associate degree in Electrical Technology, Theater Technology, Electronics, Computer Systems, or a related field; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Three or more years of experience with lighting systems, controls, low-voltage systems, commissioning, service, or related technical work.
- Experience troubleshooting electrical, networking, software, and control system issues.
- Ability to read and interpret drawings, schematics, specifications, and technical documentation.
- Valid driver's license with an insurable driving record.
- Ability to travel extensively and work flexible schedules as required.
Preferred Education and Experience
- Bachelor's degree in Theater Technology, Electrical Engineering Technology, Electronics, Computer Systems, or related field.
- Experience with ETC, Strand, Pathway, ETC Mosaic, Pharos, or similar lighting control platforms.
- Experience commissioning theatrical, architectural, or entertainment lighting systems.
- Manufacturer certifications related to lighting controls and networking systems.
- Experience providing customer training and technical support.
- Familiarity with theatrical rigging, audio-visual systems, networking, and integrated control environments.
