We are looking for a Lighting Designer!


ALULA Lighting Design is an award-winning specialty lighting design studio proudly integrated within The HIDI Group, an employee-owned multidisciplinary engineering consultancy with offices in Toronto, Ottawa, and Calgary.

From commercial workplaces and mixed-use developments to hospitality, healthcare, and institutional projects, our team creates lighting solutions that enhance architecture and elevate the human experience.


We're looking for a talented Lighting Designer who is passionate about design, enjoys collaborating with architects and engineers, and is ready to take ownership of projects from concept through construction.


Responsibilities


The Lighting Designer will work collaboratively with the ALULA lighting team and support the senior lighting designer or project managers in the full range of tasks and responsibilities required for a wide range of projects.  This includes and not limited to producing concept presentations, lighting layouts, lighting calculations, fixture specifications, mock-ups, and contract administration work (i.e. shop drawings reviews, site visits and fixture aiming).  This applies to ALULA direct projects as well as internal lighting support for HIDI’s electrical base building / tenancy department’s projects.  


General Management

  • Regular project status communication internally with ALULA project manager / senior designer.
  • Assist in project organization and communications such as meeting minutes and managing project data, on projects in various stages of design and construction.


Production

  • Compiling lighting design documentations, including presentations using InDesign with graphics and text, lighting layout drawings utilizing CAD or Revit, and lighting specifications (luminaire schedules, cutsheets).
  • Performing lighting calculations using AGI32 to verify lighting design and targets, lighting power density and budget calculations.
  • Knowledge of the lighting industry, including luminaire trends and research, mock-up and assessments, as well as communicating with manufacturer, reps, and clients.
  • Participate in the occasional on-site (in town or out of town) lighting surveys, meetings, mock-up sessions, or final fixture aiming/focusing.


Skills & Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s Degree or above in Lighting Design or associated field (Architectural Engineering, Theatrical Lighting , Architecture, Interior Design, Electrical Engineering, or Industrial Design)
    • Enjoys collaborating in a team environment
    • Strong communication skills
    • Ability to think independently
    • A demonstrated ability to work under pressure
    • Excellent time management and organizational skills
    • AutoCAD and Revit
    • AGI32 or Dialux
    • Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
    • Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, InDesign)
    • 3D modeling software such as Sketchup, Rhino (great to have, not a must)
    • Participate in industry related professional organizations (IALD, IES, etc.)
    • Certified Lighting Designer (CLD) (great to have, not a must)
    • NCQLP Lighting Certification (LC) (great to have, not a must)
    • 2 to 4 years of Lighting Design (or associated Lighting – related industry) experience
