5K Specialty Systems
Position: Lighting Controls Technician
Location: Austin, TX
Reports To: General Superintendent, 5K Specialty Systems
Employment Type: Full-Time
5K Specialty Systems is a low-voltage systems and building automation company delivering structured cabling, security and access control, audio/visual, and BAS integration solutions for commercial, industrial, and specialty facilities. Part of the 5K Holdings family, 5K Specialty Systems is built on a foundation of technical precision, reliability, and client focus — delivering systems that perform.
Position Summary
The Lighting Controls Technician installs, wires, and tests lighting control system hardware in the field, then supports commissioning of the zones and sequences once devices are in place. This is the hands-on role that turns an approved lighting controls design into a working, code-compliant system.
Key Responsibilities
  • Install lighting controls devices, sensors, panels, and relays per approved drawings and specifications
  • Run and terminate low-voltage control wiring in accordance with project standards and code requirements
  • Calibrate and test devices using basic electronic test equipment
  • Support commissioning of lighting control zones and sequences, including occupancy and daylighting functions
  • Track and record job progress; keep the Project Foreman informed and complete paperwork on time
  • Label and document installed devices and wiring for as-built accuracy
  • Report any field discrepancies from approved drawings to the Project Foreman

Qualifications & Skills
Required
  • 1–3 years of experience in low-voltage, electrical, or lighting controls installation
  • Basic understanding of lighting controls devices and wiring practices
  • Ability to read basic electrical/lighting controls drawings and wiring diagrams
  • Comfortable working at heights, in electrical rooms, and above-ceiling spaces
  • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation to job sites
Preferred
  • Trade school training or certification in electrical or lighting controls technology
  • Experience with lighting controls platforms such as Lutron, WattStopper, or Douglas Lighting Controls
  • OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification
Work Environment & Physical Requirements
This is a field-based role requiring regular travel between active construction sites. The Lighting Controls Technician must be able to lift up to 50 lbs, work at heights using ladders or lifts, work in confined or above-ceiling spaces, and comply with all jobsite safety requirements including PPE use.
