Strong analytical problem-solving abilities, teamwork, and effective communication skills are essential soft skills in this interdisciplinary field. These competencies are crucial for innovating and optimizing processes that bring life science innovations from the lab to real-world applications safely and efficiently.

What is life science in engineering?

In engineering, life science refers to the application of engineering principles to biological and medical fields, including the design of medical devices, bioprocessing systems, and healthcare technologies. Life science engineers often work with tools like biotechnology, bioinformatics, and laboratory equipment to develop solutions that improve health and biological research.

What is a Life Science Engineering job?

A Life Science Engineering job involves applying engineering principles to biological and healthcare-related fields. Professionals in this role work on developing medical devices, pharmaceutical manufacturing processes, biotechnology innovations, and environmental health solutions. They combine knowledge of biology, chemistry, and engineering to design systems that improve human health and sustainability. These jobs can be found in industries like biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, healthcare, and biomedical engineering.

What can I do with a life sci degree?

A degree in life science can lead to careers in research, healthcare, biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, and environmental science. Roles may include laboratory technician, research scientist, quality control analyst, or regulatory affairs specialist, often requiring knowledge of lab techniques, data analysis, and relevant certifications. The field offers opportunities in both industry and academia, with a focus on scientific innovation and problem-solving.

What is the highest paying job in life science?

In life science engineering, senior roles such as biomedical engineering managers, pharmaceutical directors, and research directors tend to have the highest salaries, often exceeding six figures. These positions typically require advanced degrees, extensive experience, and leadership skills, and may involve overseeing research teams or managing product development in biotech or pharmaceutical companies.

What engineers make $500,000?

In life science engineering, senior roles such as Director of Engineering or Vice President of R&D can reach or exceed $500,000 annually, especially with bonuses and stock options. These positions typically require extensive experience, advanced degrees, and leadership skills in biotech, pharmaceuticals, or medical device industries.

What are some common challenges faced in a Life Science Engineering role, and how are they typically addressed?

Professionals in Life Science Engineering often face challenges such as maintaining strict quality control standards, troubleshooting complex bioprocesses, and adapting to rapidly evolving technologies. These challenges are met by staying updated on industry best practices, collaborating closely with cross-functional teams such as research scientists, quality assurance, and manufacturing, and engaging in continuous training. Proactive problem-solving and regular communication help ensure compliance and innovation. Most organizations support engineers with ongoing professional development and robust teamwork, making it easier to address these challenges and advance in the field.

At ERM, you won't just support projects-you'll help drive them forward, working alongside experienced professionals on some of the most challenging demolition, decontamination, and remediation efforts across North America.

Why This Role Matters?

As a Consultant, Science/Engineering, you play a critical role in safely transforming contaminated and industrial sites into spaces ready for reuse. Your work helps clients manage risk, meet regulatory requirements, and move forward with confidence-while supporting ERM's mission to deliver sustainable, practical solutions for complex environmental challenges.

What Your Impact Is:

You'll be a key contributor to collecting data prior to field execution and construction management for demolition, decommissioning, and remediation projects across oil & gas, industrial manufacturing, and power generation facilities. From asbestos sampling to planning and cost estimating to contractor oversight and safety leadership, your contributions will directly influence project outcomes, schedule adherence, and safe site performance.

What You'll Bring:

Required

  • BA/BS in Industrial Hygiene, Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, or a related field

  • Certified Asbestos Inspector (sampler) state(s) licensed

  • 3-5 years of relevant industrial hygiene or environmental consulting experience preferred.

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with colleagues, clients, and project teams.

  • Experience with asbestos, mold, and lead sampling.

  • Working knowledge of applicable OSHA and EPA regulations.

  • Valid driver's license with a safe driving record.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.

Preferred

  • OSHA 40-hour HAZWOPER certification

  • Experience with demolition, decommissioning, and decontamination (DDD) projects

  • Familiarity with contractor oversight, bid packages, and cost estimating

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collect building material, air, and noise samples and interpret the data.

  • Perform asbestos and lead-based paint inspections as a lead or other building materials as required for the project.

  • Follow written scopes of work and take detailed field notes.

  • Plan and execute remediation and DDD construction projects, including design reviews, constructability assessments, cost estimates, and pre-construction coordination

  • Prepare remediation, construction, demolition, and decommissioning bid packages and engineering cost estimates

  • Provide day-to-day oversight of contractors, subcontractors, inspectors, and field staff to ensure safe, compliant, and efficient execution of work

  • Monitor project progress, schedules, and site activities; identify risks and support timely resolution

  • Review contractor submittals such as RFIs, change orders, and compliance documentation

  • Serve as Field Safety Officer on assigned projects, developing and implementing site-specific Health & Safety Plans, conducting daily safety briefings, and maintaining safety records

  • Perform construction management and quality assurance services across earthwork, site restoration, remedial systems, and disposal facilities

  • Act as a liaison between field teams and ERM Project Managers, ensuring field execution aligns with project plans and specifications

Work Environment

  • This role is primarily field-based with travel throughout the United States.

  • The majority of time will be spent conducting building assessments, inspections, and sampling activities and report writing and data analysis

For the Consultant, Science/Engineering position, the anticipated annual base pay is $74,250-$103,128 (USD). Actual pay will depend on factors such as education, experience, skills, location, performance, and business needs. In some cases, pay may fall outside this range. This role may be eligible for bonus pay (casual and fixed term/flex force employees are not bonus eligible).
