You pay either a lump sum or a series of payments, and in return, the insurer gives you regular disbursements either for a set period or for the rest of your life. Annuities can be structured in various ways, such as immediate or deferred, and can offer fixed or variable returns. They are designed to help individuals manage the risk of outliving their savings by ensuring a predictable income. Some annuities also offer death benefits or other features tied to life insurance.
