What is the difference between Lidar Scanning vs Photogrammetry Technician?

AspectLidar ScanningPhotogrammetry Technician
Required CredentialsTypically requires a background in surveying, GIS, or engineering; certifications in lidar technology are a plusOften needs GIS, remote sensing, or photogrammetry certifications; technical training in aerial or terrestrial imaging
Work EnvironmentFieldwork with lidar equipment, often outdoors, on construction sites, or in surveying projectsPrimarily office-based for data processing, with fieldwork for image capture
Industry UsageUsed in surveying, mapping, construction, and environmental monitoringUsed in mapping, land surveying, archaeology, and environmental studies

While both roles involve spatial data collection, Lidar Scanning focuses on capturing 3D point clouds using laser technology, often in outdoor environments. Photogrammetry Technicians primarily process aerial or terrestrial images to create maps and models. Both require technical skills and certifications but differ in equipment and data processing methods.

What is Lidar scanning?

Lidar scanning is a remote sensing technology that uses laser light to measure distances to the Earth's surface or objects. It works by emitting laser pulses, which bounce back after hitting an object, allowing the system to create detailed 3D maps or models of the environment. Lidar is widely used in fields such as surveying, autonomous vehicles, forestry, and archaeology due to its high accuracy and ability to capture precise spatial data quickly. The technology can be mounted on aircraft, drones, or terrestrial vehicles, making it versatile for various applications.

What are some typical challenges faced by professionals working in LiDAR scanning, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals working in LiDAR scanning often encounter challenges such as managing large datasets, ensuring data accuracy, and operating equipment in difficult environments. To address these, it is important to have strong organizational skills for data management, stay updated on calibration and processing techniques, and maintain safety protocols when working in the field. Collaborating with GIS analysts and survey teams can also help streamline workflows and ensure high-quality deliverables, supporting both individual and team success.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a LiDAR Scanning Specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a LiDAR Scanning Specialist, you need a solid background in geomatics, surveying, or engineering, often supported by a relevant degree or certification. Familiarity with LiDAR hardware, point cloud processing software (such as Leica Cyclone or Trimble RealWorks), and GIS systems is essential. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication are valuable soft skills in this role. These competencies are crucial for producing accurate spatial data, ensuring project efficiency, and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams.

You would be responsible for capturing, logging, and backing up all VFX-related on-set data including, but limited to: balls, Macbeth chart, HDRI photos, reference photography, texture photography, witness cameras, lidar/scans, measurements, and metadata (lens info, camera reports, etc.).ย

This role would ensure data integrity through verified backups, organized and labeled assets per VFX pipeline standards, and deliver daily reports to the VFX Supervisor and Production. This role works closely with the camera, editorial, and VFX teams to maintain continuity, ensure accurate data capture, and support post-production needs. This is a perfect position for someone with strong organizational skills, technical knowledge of cameras/scanning tools, excellent note taking skills, and attention to detail under tight schedules.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Photography on-set for set reference, HDRIs, and cross polarization.
  • Photogrammetry within our black-out tent for asset texture recreation, including cross polarization, flat lighting, and dynamic lighting.
  • Lidar scanning during and/or after shoots to capture all set placement as well as lighting set ups.
  • Record balls and chart passes with the camera team during shooting.
  • Take measurements and thorough notes for all lighting and actor set ups and any other necessary information the day.
  • Ingest and offload/process all data captured from on-set into the appropriate network folders, using the production's naming conventions, folder structures, and metadata requirements.
  • Manage and contribute to the proprietary on-set database, including but not limited to lens data, shot/take numbering, measurements, VFX notes, etc.
  • Place tracking markers where/when needed.
  • Operate witness cameras as necessary.
  • Fill in shot slating during shoot, where needed.
  • Troubleshoot data offloading equipment (laptops, lidar scanner, camera, etc.).
  • Maintain output quality and momentum in a fast-paced environment.
  • Coordinate with other VFX data wranglers, editorial, and camera departments to ensure all data is captured and verify that no data corruption or loss occurs during transfer.ย
  • Collaborate with VFX Supervisor, Production, and TDs to identify areas of improvement in the pipeline, including tool and workflow development.ย
  • Maintain daily media reports (file counts, backup logs, handoffs, etc.) and communicate status updates.
  • Assess needs, priorities, and delivery expectations with VFX Supervisor and Production.

Required Qualifications:

  • 2+ years experience in high-end, live action VFX films or television.
  • Expert knowledge of photography, including understanding of lenses, lighting setups, and performance tracking.
  • Proficient with a DSLR camera and processing for both photogrammetry and bracketed HDRIs.ย
  • Strong understanding of lidar scanning and processing data.
  • Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and the ability to adapt quickly to unique or proprietary workflows.
  • Willingness to receive and implement constructive feedback, whether that's with draw-overs, over the shoulder adjustments, or team meetings.
  • Basic knowledge of Shotgrid and RV.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous experience in production coordinating is a plus.
  • Experience with Cyclone Register 360 Plus for lidar scanning ingest.
  • Experience using Reality Scan for processing lidar scans and photogrammetry.
  • Experience using Rawtherapee for processing RAW data files.
  • Familiarity with hybrid workflows that span traditional VFX and digital puppetry.
  • Basic understanding of CG workflows.
