What does a licensed practical nurse do in the operating room?

A Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) in the Operating Room assists the surgical team by preparing the operating room, sterilizing equipment, and ensuring all necessary supplies are available. They help patients get ready for surgery, monitor their vital signs, and provide support during recovery. LPNs also document patient information and may assist with post-operative care, working under the supervision of registered nurses and surgeons to ensure patient safety and comfort throughout the surgical process.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a licensed practical nurse in the operating room?

To thrive as a Licensed Practical Nurse in the Operating Room, you need a solid understanding of perioperative nursing, sterile techniques, and patient care, generally backed by a practical nursing diploma and state licensure. Familiarity with electronic health records, surgical instruments, and patient monitoring systems is essential. Strong attention to detail, teamwork, and the ability to stay calm under pressure are crucial soft skills in this environment. These skills ensure patient safety, smooth surgical procedures, and effective collaboration with the surgical team.

What are some common challenges faced by licensed practical nurses in the operating room, and how can they be managed?

Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) in the operating room often encounter fast-paced, high-pressure situations that require strict attention to detail and excellent communication skills. They must be prepared to adapt quickly to changes during procedures, manage surgical instruments efficiently, and support the surgical team while prioritizing patient safety. Building strong teamwork with surgeons, registered nurses, and surgical technologists is crucial for managing these challenges, as is ongoing education on new protocols and technologies. Many LPNs find that proactive communication and staying organized help them thrive in this dynamic environment.
