What is a licensed legal intern?

Licensed Legal Interns are law students or recent graduates who have been granted a limited license to practice law under the supervision of a licensed attorney. They typically work in law firms, government agencies, or legal clinics, gaining practical experience by assisting with legal research, drafting documents, and even representing clients in certain proceedings. This role allows them to apply classroom knowledge to real-world legal issues while they complete their education or await full licensure. The specific requirements and permissions for Licensed Legal Interns vary by jurisdiction.

What are the typical responsibilities and learning opportunities for a licensed legal intern within a law firm?

Licensed Legal Interns often assist attorneys with legal research, drafting documents, and preparing for hearings or trials. They may also have the opportunity to observe client meetings, participate in depositions, and interact with court staff, providing practical experience in a real-world legal setting. This role is designed to help interns develop essential legal skills, gain exposure to different practice areas, and build professional relationships that can support future career growth. Law firms often encourage interns to ask questions and seek mentorship, making it an ideal environment for learning and professional development.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a licensed legal intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Licensed Legal Intern, you generally need a foundational understanding of legal research, writing, and analysis, along with enrollment in or graduation from an accredited law school and a limited legal intern license. Familiarity with legal research databases like Westlaw or LexisNexis, and basic proficiency in document management systems, is typically required. Strong attention to detail, effective communication, and the ability to manage time and work collaboratively set outstanding interns apart. These skills and qualifications are crucial for delivering accurate legal support, meeting deadlines, and gaining valuable hands-on experience in a legal setting.

Tokyo Electron Limited, a Japanese semiconductor company and one of the ten largest companies in Japan, is looking to hire a part-time legal intern for its legal department at its U.S. headquarters in Austin, TX. Rising 2Ls are preferred. This is a paid position for Summer of 2027.

This internship will be payrolled via our payroll processing provider.

Our U.S. legal team is comprised of experienced attorneys, paralegals, and administrative staff. We work closely with our in-house legal colleagues in Japan, Europe and across Asia. The focus of this position is in commercial and corporate practice. We have proudly employed four previous law students in this role and recently hired one of our former interns to a full-time role as an attorney. Our experience with our intern program has been excellent and we want to continue offering this position to law students.

We can offer the right candidate the ability to engage in substantive legal work from day one, including work on our non-disclosure agreements, basic transactional agreements, research projects and client-facing meetings. You will learn how to draft, revise, and analyze a range of commercial agreements. You will learn about the operation of corporate compliance programs, and you will assist with the handling and disposition of a variety of disputes. In addition, you will learn how to navigate a legal department in a multi-national corporation in a cutting-edge industry.

This is not a "hard" IP role and it will not deal with patent drafting or prosecution; thus, you do not need experience or a background in IP or technology. However, you will encounter numerous "soft IP" issues such as trade secrets and licensing.

Qualifications:

  • Currently enrolled in J.D. program.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the U.S without sponsorship
