Library Technician Assistant information

What are some common challenges faced by Library Technician Assistants, and how can they be addressed?

Library Technician Assistants often juggle multiple tasks such as shelving materials, assisting patrons, and managing circulation systems. A common challenge is efficiently balancing these responsibilities, especially during busy periods or when staff resources are limited. Developing strong organizational and time-management skills can help, as well as becoming familiar with the library’s cataloging and software systems. Proactively communicating with colleagues and supervisors can also ensure that workflow is smooth and that support is available when needed.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Library Technician Assistant, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Library Technician Assistant, you need strong organizational abilities, attention to detail, and a basic understanding of library science, often supported by a certificate or associate degree in library technology. Familiarity with integrated library systems (ILS), cataloging software, and digital archiving tools is typically required. Excellent customer service skills, communication, and teamwork are important soft skills for assisting patrons and supporting library staff. These competencies ensure efficient library operations, accurate information management, and a positive user experience.

What are Library Technician Assistants?

Library Technician Assistants are support staff who help librarians and library technicians with the daily operations of a library. Their duties often include organizing materials, assisting patrons in locating resources, checking books and materials in and out, and maintaining records. They may also help with shelving, processing new materials, and managing library equipment. Library Technician Assistants play an important role in ensuring that library services run smoothly and efficiently. They work in various settings, including public, academic, and special libraries.

Job description

Job Title: Engineering Technician
Job Description

The Engineering Technician provides dedicated drafting and documentation support to the engineering team by executing clearly defined CAD and Revit tasks. This role focuses on producing accurate drawings, maintaining model and documentation standards, and supporting legacy reconstruction efforts, without taking on design ownership, engineering decision-making, or client-facing responsibilities. The position is ideal for a detail-oriented technician who enjoys structured, task-based work and contributing to high-quality engineering deliverables in the healthcare and life sciences infrastructure space.

Responsibilities

  • Provide drawing production support by building sheets from defined views and layouts, populating title blocks, placing views, and organizing sheets according to established standards.
  • Apply standard annotations, tags, and notes to drawing sets and incorporate them into updated drawing packages as directed by engineers.
  • Execute redlines by implementing markups provided by engineers, updating drawing sets based on iterative feedback, and maintaining clear version control between drawing iterations.
  • Support library and standardization efforts by building and maintaining Revit families from defined inputs, creating standard details based on existing examples, and organizing and cleaning up detail libraries.
  • Assist in the development of reusable drawing components that improve consistency and efficiency across projects.
  • Perform model cleanup and maintenance in Revit, including removing unused families, views, and duplicates, organizing model structure, and improving naming, visibility, and sheet organization.
  • Identify and fix annotation inconsistencies to enhance clarity and accuracy of models and drawing sets.
  • Improve model performance and clarity by applying best practices for file organization, visibility settings, and content management.
  • Provide documentation support by maintaining drawing logs and revision records, organizing file structures, and preparing submittal-ready packages focused on formatting and completeness.
  • Export PDFs and assemble final deliverables according to project requirements and engineering direction.
  • Complete repetitive modeling tasks such as copying and modifying standard layouts, adjusting dimensions after design changes, and placing equipment and families as directed by engineers.
  • Update schedules from defined inputs, ensuring that changes accurately reflect the latest design information without altering design intent.
  • Support advanced reconstruction and standardization efforts for legacy or incomplete design documentation, including rebuilding legacy or incomplete AutoCAD drawings in Revit using defined templates and example projects.
  • Apply established design patterns and company standards to build structured and consistent Revit models and drawing packages.
  • Assemble drawing packages based on reference designs and detailed direction from engineers, ensuring alignment with existing standards.
  • Translate sketches, markups, or partial information into structured models while preserving the original design intent and avoiding independent design decisions.
  • Identify gaps or missing information in provided inputs and clearly flag these issues for engineering resolution rather than making assumptions.
  • Adhere strictly to the constraint that all design-related questions and uncertainties are escalated to the engineering team, without interpreting incomplete information or modifying layout intent.
  • Work within a task-based, milestone-driven utilization model, managing workload that typically ranges between 10 and 25 hours per week depending on project phase.
  • Adjust workload and priorities to align with higher utilization during documentation and revision phases and lower utilization during early design and concept phases.
  • Execute assigned tasks only when requirements and direction are sufficiently defined to proceed without continuous supervision, supporting a flexible engineering workflow with shifting priorities.
Essential Skills
  • At least 1 year of hands-on AutoCAD experience in an industry setting.
  • At least 1 year of practical Revit experience, including model creation, sheet setup, and documentation workflows.
  • Strong understanding of building codes and how they influence drawing content, documentation standards, and coordination requirements.
  • Ability to follow predefined standards, templates, and patterns without deviating from established design intent.
  • Proficiency in executing redlines and markups accurately and efficiently while maintaining version control and documentation integrity.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills for managing drawing sets, file structures, and revision records.
  • Capability to clean up and maintain Revit models by removing unused content, organizing views and sheets, and correcting annotations.
  • Comfort working in a task-based, milestone-driven environment with fluctuating weekly hours and shifting priorities.
  • Effective communication skills to clarify requirements, flag missing information, and coordinate with engineers on design-related questions.
  • Ability to work independently within clearly defined scopes while adhering to engineering direction and company standards.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • A few years of industry experience in an engineering, architectural, or related technical environment.
  • Experience with SolidWorks for supporting mechanical or equipment-related modeling tasks.
  • Experience working in a GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice) environment or within the life sciences sector.
  • Familiarity with modular or mobile healthcare infrastructure, imaging suites, or cleanroom environments.
  • Experience supporting reconstruction of legacy or incomplete AutoCAD drawings into Revit using templates and reference projects.
  • Background in producing documentation for regulated environments where accuracy, traceability, and compliance are critical.
  • Ability to apply established design patterns and company standards to ensure consistency across multiple projects.
Work Environment

The Engineering Technician works on-site in a facility with approximately 40–45 team members present locally and around 200 employees across the broader organization. The role directly supports two engineers and integrates into a collaborative engineering team focused on delivering mobile and modular healthcare infrastructure and cleanroom solutions for hospitals, pharmaceutical, and biotech clients. Standard working hours are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, with little to no overtime anticipated during the contract period. Utilization is task-based and milestone-driven rather than fixed-hour, with average weekly demand estimated between 10 and 25 hours depending on project phase, and with higher workloads during documentation and revision phases. The environment emphasizes structured workflows, defined standards, and clear engineering direction, using tools such as AutoCAD, Revit, and potentially SolidWorks to support high-quality, compliant engineering documentation and models.
