Job Description:

The Conservation Technician is part of the Conservation and Preservation Department, reports to the Conservator, and has the primary responsibility of performing book repair, binding, housing construction, and conservation treatments on circulating library material. This position will work closely with all staff in the Conservation Lab at the Smathers Libraries.
Please note that this is an off-campus job requiring students to have their own transportation to the facility.  Bus lines are not stable transportation to this area of the city so access to a car is essential.
Our address is 4040 NE 49th Avenue Gainesville, FL 32609.

Repairing and housing circulating collection materials. First semester will focus mostly on making pamphlets for items needing hard covers.  Work beyond one semester will increase skills in other repair and boxing techniques.

Expected Salary:

$15.25/hr

Required Qualifications:

Manual dexterity. Ability to accurately and safely measure, cut and glue paper and cloth binding materials.
Ability to perform simple bindings and mends, using needle and thread, scissors, knives, and other hand tools.
Ability to communicate effectively and follow written and oral instructions. Hand skills test will be part of the interview process.

Must have their own, reliable transportation to the facility as this position is off campus.

Preferred:

Hand skills from a transferable art and/or craft. Has worked in a library and/or museum previously.
