What is library technical services?

Library Technical Services refer to the behind-the-scenes operations in a library that support the acquisition, organization, and maintenance of library materials. This typically includes cataloging, processing, classifying, and preserving books, journals, and digital resources. Staff in technical services ensure that materials are accurately described and accessible in the library's catalog, making it easier for patrons to find and use resources. Their work is essential for the smooth functioning of the library, even though they may not interact directly with the public.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in library technical services, and why are they important?

To thrive in Library Technical Services, you need knowledge of cataloging standards, metadata management, and library science principles, often supported by a relevant degree such as an MLIS. Familiarity with integrated library systems (ILS), classification tools like MARC or RDA, and digital resource management platforms is typically required. Attention to detail, analytical thinking, and effective teamwork are vital soft skills for this role. These skills ensure accurate organization, accessibility, and maintenance of library collections, which are essential for efficient information retrieval and user satisfaction.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in library technical services, and how can they be managed?

Professionals in Library Technical Services often encounter challenges such as staying updated with evolving cataloging standards, managing large volumes of materials, and integrating new technologies into existing library systems. Adapting to frequent changes in metadata standards like RDA and MARC requires continuous learning and collaboration with colleagues. Effective time management, regular training, and clear communication with other library departments can help address these challenges and ensure smooth workflows.

Job description

About Helpside

Helpside is the HR department for small businesses that don't have one - payroll, benefits, HR, safety, and workers' comp, handled by people who do nothing else.

We serve small and mid-sized businesses across the U.S. Today we run more than $1B in annual payroll for more than 1,000 companies and tens of thousands of their employees.

Role Overview

We’re looking for a senior full stack software engineer who loves to build and ship. You’ll design, build, and own features end to end across our HR, payroll, and benefits platform - from technical design through deployment and support - writing clean, well-tested code that holds up in production.

You’ll work closely with product, design, and other engineers to turn complex requirements into simple, reliable software. We use AI tools heavily to move faster, and we expect you to as well - but we hire for engineering judgment first.

Key Responsibilities

Build & Ship

  • Design, build, test, and maintain features across the stack, owning them from technical design through production
  • Write clean, maintainable, well-tested code and contribute to a healthy, scalable codebase
  • Break large problems into shippable increments and deliver them on a predictable cadence

Quality & Reliability

  • Own the reliability of the systems you build - monitoring, debugging, and resolving production issues
  • Care about security, performance, and data integrity in a domain where accuracy is non-negotiable
  • Help improve engineering practices: testing, code review, CI/CD, and tooling

Collaboration

  • Partner with product and design to scope work, clarify requirements, and propose practical solutions
  • Give and receive thoughtful code reviews and technical feedback
  • Communicate clearly about trade-offs, progress, and risks with both technical and non-technical partners

How We Build

  • Use AI tools as part of how you build - to accelerate design, coding, testing, and debugging
  • Mentor engineers and help raise the bar for the team

Qualifications

  • 5+ years of professional software engineering experience building and shipping production software, preferably in B2B/SaaS
  • High agency. You don’t wait to be told. You see a gap and fill it.
  • Strong fluency in at least one modern programming language and the ability to work effectively across the stack
  • Experience designing, building, and operating web applications and APIs in production
  • Expert in C# with an understanding of OOP and application architecture.
  • Proficient in SQL, Transact-SQL (T-SQL), with an understanding of relational database design.
  • Experience creating and consuming services and data.
  • Disciplined coding, with a commitment to maintain a team-defined framework/architecture.
  • Expert at researching bugs and providing effective solutions.
  • Solid grasp of fundamentals: data modeling, testing, version control, and CI/CD
  • You use AI tools (Claude Code, Cursor, Codex, etc.) as part of how you build - and you have the judgment to know when to trust them and when not to

Nice to have

  • Experience in HR tech, payroll, benefits, fintech, or other complex, data-heavy domains
  • Front-End Web Development skills:  HTML, CSS, JavaScript (“raw” + common libraries), Responsive Web Design (RWD).
  • Experience with Vue.js, or other common JS libraries and frameworks (Angular, React, etc.).
  • Experience with Agile methodologies and tools.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Competitive Salary
  • Health insurance 100% paid by employer (for both employee and family!)
  • Additional voluntary supplemental benefits including dental, vision, life insurance, disability, accident, critical illness, etc.
  • 401(k) with company match
  • Paid holidays and paid time off

Job Type: Full-Time. Job Location: Lindon, Utah (In-Person/Hybrid)
