Job description

Purpose:

This position is responsible for daily safety and security in a library branch, including the delivery of excellent customer service to a diverse population.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Takes an active and visible role in maintaining safety and security of library property. Assists library administration and staff in providing a safe and secure environment for customers. Takes direction from the Branch Manager and Director of Facilities and Security.
  • Continually patrols internal and external library property and observes activity. Monitors and reacts to emergencies and activities on library property.
  • De-escalates negative interactions involving library customers as appropriate.
  • Proactively plans to prevent safety problems and disruptions to the library environment. Interacts with law enforcement personnel as necessary to ensure a safe environment.
  • Demonstrates professional demeanor, confidentiality, and excellent customer service in all interactions. Builds rapport with customers and establishes positive relationships as necessary to maintain safety.
  • Operates security systems, including but not limited to: cameras, DVRs, fire safety systems, security systems, and incident reporting software. Prepares written reports on safety and incident summaries as directed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge of:

  • Customer service principles.
  • Security & safety principles.

Skill in:

  • Working with middle school, high school, and/or unhoused populations.
  • Conflict de-escalation and resolution.
  • Providing excellent customer service and building rapport.
  • Prompt and regular attendance.
  • Exceptional communication skills.
  • Exercising sound judgment and decision making.
  • Basic software, including but not limited to Google Workspace, Microsoft Office, and time and attendance software.
  • Working flexible hours.

Education and/or Work Experience Requirements:

  • High School Diploma Required; Associate’s Degree or higher preferred.
  • Two years of customer service experience.
  • Two years of law enforcement or security experience is preferred.

Licensing Requirements:

  • Valid GA Driver’s License and reliable transportation.
  • GA Basic Mandate Law Enforcement Training preferred but not required.

Physical and Mental Requirements:

  • Ability to speak, read and write English.
  • Ability to work effectively and efficiently in fast paced environment.
  • Ability to listen more closely and acutely than normal daily life to accurately perceive information is required.
  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods of time; climb stairs; run, sit, climb and/or balance; stoop; kneel; crouch; crawl; use hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms.
  • Ability to move through approximately 25,000 square foot building.
  • Light physical effort required to frequently and repetitively lift or move lightweight parts and materials.
  • Regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.
  • Ability to work successfully in a team environment.
  • Ability to effectively handle multiple tasks simultaneously and accept job assignments from employees other than immediate supervisor.
