Library Clerk

Role: Supports the daily operations of library services for users in a cooperative, efficient and in an informed manner that enhances their experience at the Library.

Essential Functions & Responsibilities:

30% | Performs a full range of functions within the automated, integrated library system (ILS), including creating and maintaining accurate records for library users and materials. Provides service at the information desk and assists users in accessing library resources. Responds to questions, identifies user needs, and refers students, faculty, and community members to the appropriate staff member when additional assistance is required. Daily responsibilities include circulating materials, registering new cardholders, answering telephone calls, and processing holds.

30% | Processes materials, preparing for cataloging, and creating ready access of tools. Inventories collections. Maintain materials in accurate locations. Shelves materials and shifts materials according to needs of space.

20% | Demonstrates and explains the use of library equipment, databases, and related technology, including print management systems and the online public access catalog (OPAC), etc. Assists with opening and closing procedures for the library.

15% | Create displays and help with educational marketing opportunities

5% | Performs other duties as needed or assigned.

  6. | Maintain acceptable record of timeliness and attendance.
  7. | Maintains current knowledge of computer systems and applications required to perform daily work.
  8. | Maintains Library public areas and stacks in a clean and orderly fashion.

Knowledge and Skills:

Experience: Two or more years of similar or related experience.

Education: A high school education or GED.

Interpersonal Skills: Work normally involves contacts with persons beyond immediate associates generally regarding routine matters for purposes of giving or obtaining information which may require some discussion. Outside contacts take the form of service to the public (students, visitors or vendors) requiring ordinary courtesy in providing assistance and information.

Other Skills: Sound decision-making skills, Basic problem-solving skills Working knowledge of Microsoft Office products, ILS systems, OCLC, and MARC systems

Physical Requirements: The work requires the ability to push loaded book carts up to 50lbs, walking, sitting, stooping, and routinely lifting lightweight items.

Work Environment: Regular exposure to favorable conditions such as those found in a typical library.
