Overview:
The Digital Production Group (DPG), located in Shannon Library, is hiring students with experience or interest in photography, library work, and cultural heritage materials. DPG student employees photograph rare materials and circulating items that are considered 'medium rare' or are too fragile for circulation. We anticipate hiring up to three students for work this fall (2026). Work with DPG and the associated internship may extend through the spring semester (2027), contingent upon continuing student interest and program funding.
The Digital Production Group (DPG) at the University of Virginia Library provides a full suite of services to create, manage, deliver, and expand access to the University of Virginia's distinctive digital collections. The DPG's primary mission is to convert the Library's rare, medium rare and unique materials to digital formats which the U.Va. community can use to support research and instructional needs.
Additional duties include but are not limited to:

• Care and handling of rare and unique library materials (books, manuscripts, maps, photographs, negatives, etc.)
• Software packages: CaptureOne, Adobe Photoshop and the department's tracking system and project processing software.
• Equipment: Principally Phase One medium format cameras, a large-format Cruse scanner (for oversize items), Atiz book scanners using Canon cameras, and Epson flatbed scanners. There may be some opportunity to learn/use other professional cameras and tools for rare material work.

Student employees also perform quality assurance tasks for their own work and the work of fellow employees, providing a variety of tasks and materials. Students will gain an understanding of the digital workflow of the unit, be exposed to a variety of rare and unique materials, and benefit from the mentoring of library staff.
Internship Particulars:
In addition to the job duties and responsibilities outlined above, this position will participate in the structured Transformational Federal Work-Study (TWFS) Internship offered through the Internship Placement Program (IPP). If selected, interns must enroll in either UNST 3910 (1 cr.) or UNST 3910 (1 cr.) and the course fee will be paid through the program. These 75-minute weekly courses are offered 9+ times during the fall semester, offering plenty of scheduling options. If the course does not work for your schedule, the program also offers an asynchronous co-curricular workshop series through Canvas. Through this robust internship experience, students will receive dedicated career support from their internship supervisor and gain key skills and competencies that align with future job interests. The TFWS Internship will look great on your resume and provide you with impactful stories to share in interviews. TFWS internships are best suited for students in their 2nd-4th years.

Compensation: Starting pay is $16.71/hr.
Scheduling: With a weekly work commitment of up to 10 hours expected. Following paid training, weekday hours from M-F can be flexible within daily windows extending from 9-5. Weekly class time aligned with the internship will be covered as paid work time, for selected and approved students.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers and high-end photographic equipment. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs.
