Job description

The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) is seeking a USER ACCESS STACKS ASSOCIATE to support the role and function of the HUB Service Desks at either Sterne or Lister Hill Libraries. To assist in efficiently and effectively providing services to all library users, in person and virtually during library operating hours. User Access Associates will aid in management of the library's public spaces and library collection, with a specific focus on the display and distribution of physical collections, the compiling and analysis of data about current density levels, the development of growth projections, and the execution of projects to shift or relocate collections.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Reporting to the HUB Desk supervisor this position works closely with the Remote Storage Supervisor, User Services Librarian and others to oversee library stack maintenance in order to improve collection usability.
  • Oversees stack inventories at both libraries, including shifting materials, collaborating with Collection Development Librarians to weed and coordinating transfers to off-site storage.
  • Staffs the HUB desk, providing effective customer service to all library users, assisting patrons with ready reference and directional questions and inquiries about the libraries' services and spaces; interprets library policies, handles specialized materials, and resolves problems as necessary.
  • Creates and manages patron records; monitor records for library materials to allow for circulation; processes guest accounts for community members using the library.
  • Leads shifts and directs Student Assistants as appropriate.
  • Actively engage in staff professional development opportunities.
  • Ensure library public spaces are clean and organized at all times; identifies and reports building and materials issues as appropriate.
  • Handles troubleshooting.
  • Refers emergency situations to appropriate personnel such as UAB Police, Facilities, supervisor, etc., and provides backup support if needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

(Hourly Rate: $15.00 - $24.40)
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in a related field required; two (2) years of related experience preferred. Work experience may substitute for education requirement.
Exhibit proficiency in Microsoft office products (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Access, Outlook). Adept with technology, both common and specialized. A minimum of two (2) years' experience in a customer service role and a knowledge of library services, operations, and of library collections. Prior demonstrated experience with physical inventory processes (retrieval, shelving, shifting, stocking displays/shelves) in a process-driven work environment preferred.
