Job description

The purpose of this classification is to supervise the staff and operations of the Circulation Unit within the Headquarters Library.
KEY RESPOSIBILITIES AND PERFORMANCE STANDARDS:
  • Supervises, directs, and evaluates assigned staff: develops and oversees employee work schedules to ensure adequate coverage and control; compiles and reviews timesheets; processes employee concerns and problems and counsels or disciplines as appropriate; assists with or completes employee performance appraisals; directs work; acts as a liaison between employees and administration; and trains staff in operations, policies, and procedures.
  • Supervises the operations of the Circulation Unit: coordinates daily work activities; organizes and prioritizes workload; makes work assignments; monitors status of work in progress; inspects completed work; troubleshoots problem situations; and provides guidance, training and technical expertise.
  • Collects fees for overdue and damaged items: provides information and answers questions regarding fines and fees applied to patron accounts; processes cash, check and credit card payments; balances cash drawer; prepares deposit; posts bankruptcy information and returned checks and forwards to collection agency; monitors related reports; and prepares and sends related correspondence.
  • Assists in developing and implementing circulation policies and procedures: makes recommendations regarding changes to work processes to enhance operations and provide better service to library patrons; and monitors implementation of approved changes to ensure compliance.
  • Checks library materials in and out: operates the library's automated circulation system to charge, discharge, and renew books and audio/visual materials; retrieves books from book drop; inspects materials for damage and withdraws materials in need of repair from circulation; inspects for routing slips or other identification prior to shelving; routes books to other locations as appropriate; sorts and arranges materials on book carts for shelving; and separates new books for display.
  • Provides customer service to library patrons and the public: provides assistance and information related to library services, fees, procedures, information and directions, or other issues; researches book titles, book availability, patron records, or related information; reserves materials for patrons; notifies patrons about overdue books, arrival of reserved books, or other issues; and assists patrons with the use of various library equipment.
  • Perform other duties of a similar nature or level.

Education: Bachelor's Degree in Library Science or related field required.
Experience: Three years of experience in library services.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
  • Considerable knowledge of circulation procedures, to include the Georgia Evergreen automated library system.
  • Knowledge of computers and software, including the Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Administrative /supervisory ability and knowledge of managerial procedures.
  • Familiarity with library policies and procedures as they relate to circulation.

Skills:
  • Proficiency in management ability, to include excellent time management and supervision of staff.
  • Mastery of operating a computer, cash register, calculator, laser scanner and sensitizing/desensitizing machines.
  • Good communication skills, both oral and written; skill in patron relations, dealing with complaints and problem situations and interacting with a wide cross-section of people.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently.
  • Ability to supervise and/or train designated subordinate personnel.

Certification: None
Licensing:
  • Possession of a valid driver's license with good driving history. If State license is other than Georgia or South Carolina, applicant must obtain a license in Georgia or South Carolina within 30 days of employment.

  • Physical Abilities: Tasks require the ability to exert light physical effort in sedentary to light work, but which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of light weight (5-10 pounds). Tasks may involve extended periods of time at a keyboard or workstation.
  • Sensory Requirements: Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally
  • Environmental Factors: Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as rude/irate customers.
