Job description

SALARY: $12.00, Hourly NON-EXEMPT OPENING DATE: 08/17/2026 CLOSING DATE: 08/24/2026 JOB SUMMARY University/college students, under the supervision of the circulation librarian or designated employee in charge, perform a wide variety of routine Library tasks. SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED Receives supervision from the Assistant Director of Library, with evening and weekend work monitored by the on-duty supervisor. EXAMPLES OF IMPORTANT RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES - Essential and other important duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following: Sort and shelve books

Review and maintain order of books on shelves. Check out library materials to patrons and register items in upon return. Answer telephone and direct calls.

Review and maintain the order of books on all shelves. Collect and shelve books and magazines left out of place by patrons. Assist patrons in the use of the photocopy machines.

Perform other duties as required to meet the needs of the library and its patrons. Maintain mental capacity which allows the capabilities to: exercise sound judgment and rational thinking under stressful circumstances evaluate various options and alternatives and choose an appropriate and reasonable course of action operate effectively in an economically and culturally diverse environment. Maintain physical condition which will allow the capability to perform the following: running, walking or standing for extended periods of time climbing stairs or ladders, stooping or squatting moving loads of approximately 25 - 50 lbs.

Maintain effective audio-visual discrimination and perception for: making observations reading and writing operating necessary and assigned equipment communicating with others. QUALIFICATIONS Must be a Lamar State College or Lamar University qualifying student, and able to perform simple, routine library operations. Student assistants are usually chosen from among the best qualified students of a high school graduating class who expect to attend Lamar State College, Lamar University or other higher education institute.

Preference is given to those who might be interested in library work as a profession. Student Assistants must produce a letter of intent to enroll, and a subsequent class schedule after being recommended for hire. Student Assistant - Library Circulation - Posting #26-074.
