The library clerk performs customer service, clerical, and paraprofessional duties that support library functions. These functions may include any of the following: opening and closing the library, organizing and running the circulation desk, recording library statistics, scheduling and processing Meeting, Activity, and Study Room requests, processing patron notifications for overdue materials, processing new patron accounts, shelving books and maintaining order in the collection, providing program assistance to the staff, and organizing monthly library displays. The clerk provides information services to the public, explains and assists with using the online catalog and the electronic databases, and locates materials within the library. The clerk provides patron assistance in the use of the library computers and Microsoft productivity software.
The Main focus of this clerk position is to create and distribute library marketing materials, assist with managing library social media platforms, create and organize library displays, and create and provide program assistance, planning, and support.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities (Other duties may be assigned)
- Communicates effectively with the public; assists patrons in the use of library collections, the online catalog, TexShare databases, reference books, and indexes.
- Liaisons with City Communications Department to help with marketing library programs.
- Uses the Library's Integrated Library System and performs circulation duties which include, but are not limited to, charging/discharging library materials, inputting new/revised customer and/or materials data, collecting payment for library services and fees, and processing circulation reports.
- Keeps the library and work areas tidy, attractive, and engaging.
- Schedules reservations of the library Meeting, Activity, and Study Room use. Maintains applications and schedules using Google calendar.
- Uses a variety of computer and word processing software to prepare, email and print a variety of letters, reports, memos, and other documents.
- Performs clerical and record keeping tasks which include, but are not limited to, receiving and processing magazines and newspapers; checking shelves for missing/misplaced items; and assisting with shelving library materials.
- Assists patrons in the use of computers and library equipment.
- Records daily circulation statistics and maintains statistical records. Assists librarians with preparation of reports and maintenance of records related to the Texas State Library.
- Maintains and performs all circulation desk procedures as needed.
- Shelves books and maintains order in the collection.
- Implements necessary library procedures.
- Assists with collection and property inventories when needed.
- Assists librarians with program planning and support as needed. Assists with Summer Reading Program activities as requested and maintains records.
- Works with the Library Director, Youth Librarian, and Library Assistant to create and organize social media calendars. Creates, schedules, and proof-reads all marketing and social media posts.
- Creates flyers and social media posts using library marketing software (Canva).
- Plans an annual calendar of displays and collaborates with members of the community to produce and install displays. Maintains a record of each display theme and materials used.
- Regular and punctual attendance is an essential duty of this position.
- Performs other duties and fulfills responsibilities as required by the Library Director.

Education and/or Experience
- High School Diploma or GED required.
- Experience in responsible clerical or office type work of any kind.
- Two years of college, Associate degree or higher preferred.
- Previous experience in a public library is preferred.
- Experience with social media content creation and library programming is highly preferred.
- Any equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
- Ability to interact effectively with the public to promote positive public relations and respond professionally during stressful times and situations at the circulation desk.
- Ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing.
- Fluent in reading and speaking English.
- Alphabetical and numerical filing. Knowledge of the Dewey Decimal system.
- Knowledge of personal computers and possess an understanding of computer networking.
- Ability and willingness to use Microsoft spreadsheet and word processing applications is required.
- An understanding of the purpose and use of databases is required.
- Ability to type 30 WPM.
- Excellent organizational and time management skills.
- Ability to be responsible for the performance and completion of routine tasks.

Position Type and Expected Hours of Work
This is a part-time position working approximately 20 hours per week. Emphasis is on providing customer service at the circulation desk. These hours may increase during times when the Library is understaffed, or additional coverage is needed. Regular days and hours of work include weekdays, weekends and evenings and may change at any time, with or without notice, to accommodate the needs of the department and the City.
Travel
An employee in this position may be required to drive a vehicle to various meetings, functions, and events, including traveling out of town to represent the City at meetings, conferences and for training.
