Library Assistants are support staff who help ensure the smooth operation of libraries. They assist patrons with finding materials, check books in and out, organize and shelve library items, and help maintain library records. Their duties often include answering basic questions, processing new materials, and supporting librarians in daily tasks. Library Assistants play an important role in making the library a welcoming and organized space for everyone.

What does a Library Assistant do?

Library assistants support the head librarian in operating the library and maintaining its materials. Other responsibilities include cataloging books, movies, audio resources, reference materials, slides, and microfilm. Library assistants inspect these items regularly for damage or missing pieces, especially while they are checking out resources to library patrons. As a library assistant, you must enjoy helping visitors locate materials, as well as providing technical assistance as needed. While a library assistant job does not require education beyond a high school diploma or equivalent, job seekers pursuing a career as a librarian will need a master’s degree in library science or a related field.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Library Assistant, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Library Assistant, you need strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and a high school diploma or equivalent, with some roles preferring library science coursework or experience. Familiarity with library cataloging systems, integrated library software (like Koha or Aleph), and basic computer applications is typically required. Excellent customer service, communication, and teamwork abilities help Library Assistants effectively support patrons and library staff. These skills and qualities are crucial for maintaining efficient library operations, ensuring accurate resource management, and providing a welcoming environment for users.

What are some common challenges library assistants face, and how can they effectively handle them?

Library Assistants often encounter challenges such as managing high volumes of patron requests, maintaining accurate organization of materials, and adapting to new library technologies. To handle these effectively, it's important to develop strong organizational skills, practice clear communication with patrons and colleagues, and stay up to date with library management systems. Regular training and seeking support from senior staff can also help Library Assistants navigate busy periods and technology updates with confidence.

Job description

Johnson Controls is a global leader in thermal management, mission-critical building systems, energy efficiency, and decarbonization. We help customers use energy more productively, reduce carbon emissions, and operate with the precision and resilience required in demanding environments such as data centers, healthcare, pharmaceuticals, advanced manufacturing, and higher education.

For more than 140 years, Johnson Controls has delivered performance where it matters most. Backed by advanced technology, lifecycle services, and an industry-leading field organization, we help turn project goals into real-world results and move society forward.

Role Overview

As an HVAC Controls Systems Designer, you will support the design, programming, commissioning, and documentation of HVAC control systems. Working under direct supervision and established standards, you will help ensure each project meets the intent of the customer's requirements and is clearly communicated to internal teams, customers, consultants, and subcontractors.

Key Responsibilities
  • Select hardware designs from the standard design library for flow diagrams, sequences of operation, bills of material, network layouts, and electrical schematics.

  • Perform software programming using established standards as the basis of design.

  • Coordinate the creation of drawings and equipment schedules for submittals and installation.

  • Select, order, and track materials for assigned projects and coordinate factory-mounting processes to align with project schedules.

  • Assist with loading and commissioning system and network-level controllers, validate overall system functionality, and troubleshoot issues with subcontractors and other trades.

  • Gather field changes and create as-built drawings and software; prepare documentation and manuals for system operation.

  • Keep management and the customer informed of job progress, issues, and next steps.

  • Support site-specific training for owner/operators on the total system.

  • Complete time sheets, expense reports, and on-site documentation accurately and on time.

  • Adhere to safety standards with a high degree of regard for employee and subcontractor safety.

How You Will Do It
  • Use established standards and the standard design library to build consistent, practical control solutions that align with project requirements.

  • Stay close to the work and communicate early by coordinating with customers, consultants, the field installation team, and subcontractors when questions or changes arise.

  • Own your documentation and follow-through so submittals, schedules, as-builts, software changes, and manuals remain accurate through turnover.

  • Approach commissioning with a hands-on, problem-solving mindset to validate functionality, resolve issues, and help bring each system into reliable operation.

  • Work safely, honestly, and as one team by sharing progress clearly, supporting others across trades, and keeping employee and subcontractor safety front and center.

  • Look for continuous improvement in everyday work by capturing field feedback, applying lessons learned, and making each project more efficient and effective.

Qualifications
  • Minimum of three years of experience with installing and/or commissioning controls systems, including system-level controllers.

  • Working knowledge and experience using Microsoft Office.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of mechanical, electrical, and control systems.

  • Demonstrated technical aptitude.

  • Demonstrated advanced computer skills.

Nice to Have
  • Associate or bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Computer Science, or 5+ years in the HVAC field.

  • Experience designing or evaluating mechanical/electrical building systems or control systems.

Why Join Us

You will join a team that combines strong technical standards with practical field execution. This role includes a competitive benefits package, and the posted hourly range is $32.07-$48.13, with final compensation determined by education, experience, knowledge, skills, abilities, internal equity, and market data. Johnson Controls also recognizes that exceptional candidates may bring unique experience beyond the typical profile.

If you're ready to help design and deliver HVAC control systems that perform where it matters most, we'd love to hear from you.
